They only need to have enough done by 10am Monday so that the ship can load and unload. They don't have an option not to make it but they have 24 hour shifts going.

Will a steel deck be welded onto those beams?

Golly, that does not look like it can be done by Monday.

It better be I'm planning on using the service on Monday.

I don't see it being ready for the Coho in two days. It's not like there are no alternative ways of getting back and forth to Washington State.

If I had a reservation I would be cancelling it and taking BC Ferries. Give the construction people more time to do a proper job.

As long as the ramp is now working I can see them pulling it off.

Will they be using one of the cranes to raise and lower the ramp or will all the proper machinery be in place?

Businesses in Port Angeles have dusted off the welcome mat and added a financial incentive to attract Canadian visitors to coincide with the return of Black Ball’s Coho car ferry next week.

More than 30 businesses in the Washington state port city will accept the Canadian dollar at par through March and April to offset the strength of the U.S. dollar to the loonie.

“The Vancouver Island market has always been a good one for us on the Olympic Peninsula, but any time you are 30 per cent behind the curve, people start to think twice about taking off on a trip,” said Marsha Massey, executive director of the Olympic Peninsula Visitor Bureau.

“We know our Canadian visitors are down and we are pretty sure that’s related to the exchange rate.”

The Canadian dollar, which has shown some improvement this week, closed up 0.15 of a U.S. cent to 74 cents US Friday. The currency improved almost a cent and a half over the past week.

“We really wanted to get a jump on the season and let our friends in Canada know we love them and want them to come back,” said Massey. She pegged the impact of Canadian spending in the area at between 15 and 20 per cent of the economy.

The promotion, called “Go Loonie! Olympic Peninsula at Par!” starts the day after Black Ball’s Coho car ferry returns to service Monday after two months.

I take back all of my earlier reservations (sic) about whether or not they would be loading boats Monday morning.  Looks like they got 'er done!  A few customs booths are up, they're grading for paving (maybe tomorrow?). I'm still not sure where all the extracted pilings etc. are going to go (still there...).  Photos from today.

Plus, take a look at how much rebar they've got on the southern retaining wall.  It's not like the wall is holding back much.  You can see this from the sidewalk and it's a free-standing wall, not holding back huge volumes of earth etc.,

They have to have the Pistons in place as the dock needs to be equalized to comply with Maritime safety regs as a commercial public carier. Obviously some docks for non commercial public companies can be a bit more rustic.

She's Back...

Is it me or does this look like a new ship?  Still much to be done, note the ongoing paving, and the old timber piles.  Lots of on-lookers.

Looks like the same ship to me.  It's the largest potential floating billboard in the harbour and it still gives no indication of what it is or where it goes.

Anyhow, I guess they are making sure the ramp works.  Would be a shame to bring over a boatload of cars and trucks tomorrow, only to find out the ramp does not mate to the ferry right.

The Coho is good example of a proven design with proper maintenance

The Coho design was modified by BC Ferries to construct the Queen of Sidney, built in 1960 and retired in 2000.

But I think you'll find the Queen of Sidney put in way more daily hours than Coho.  You have to consider that.   Queen of Tsawwassen made it to 2008.

But I think you'll find the Queen of Sidney put in way more daily hours than Coho.  You have to consider that.   Queen of Tsawwassen made it to 2008.

During her summer schedule the Coho does 250 km per day.

The Queen of Sidney was in service for 40 years.

The Queen of Tsawwassen was in service for 49 years.

The Coho has been in service for 56 years, and is still going strong.
