It could be Lisa was just sticking up for the cruise industry or maybe she was against the motion because she saw it as meddling in the jurisdiction of the Feds etc. I don't know.

We’ll see about that Florida vacay.
Yep, she cancelled the trip to FLA outright.
Disappointed and relieved at the same time.

by my quick count that's 121 victoria stops knocked off for the season. counting all scheduled stops before july 1.
now i suppose some lines/ships might just abandon the alaska run for 2020 and move elsewhere if they can find routes that will still make sense.quick
quick count vancouver looks like 119 knocked out.

the actual press release says ferries are exempt.
As a response to COVID-19, the Government of Canada will defer the start of the cruise ship season in Canada, from April 2, 2020, to July 1, 2020, at the earliest. This deferral will apply to cruise ships capable of carrying more than 500 passengers and crew members.
Given the limited public health capacity in Canada’s Northern communities, the cruise ship season for vessels with Canadian Arctic stops will be deferred for the entire season this year. This would apply to cruise ships of all sizes.
While this measure does not apply to ferries or smaller vessels at this time, the Government of Canada is also developing an approach to ensure health measures are strengthened in all passenger vessels across Canada.

My bet is she was trying to play both sides of the coin. In any event the decision was made for her.
Given that the tourism sector is going to be devastated here, perhaps a smart move might be to delay hiring the additional 24 staff that Lisa wants to hire into important areas such as reconciliation dialogue and save the money to help offset property taxes for the businesses that might otherwise have to close.

^Agree on both counts. This is all hands on deck time.
I'm pretty sure Helps got a heads up from the Feds, she just didn't want Council getting to far ahead of their skis trying to fix something that was going to be fixed for them.

Thirteen passengers and 29 crew members have fallen ill with influenza-like symptoms on board a Holland America Line cruise ship currently off the coast of Chile. And Canadians on the ship — which has been searching for a place to dock since March 14 — are desperate to get home.

Four dead, 138 sick on Holland America's MS Zaandam cruise in limbo amid coronavirus crisis
Four elderly passengers on board Holland America's MS Zaandam have died on the cruise ship that is stuck in limbo during the coronavirus pandemic.
The ship is currently carrying 138 people who have complained of flu-like symptoms, which are similar to coronavirus symptoms. Two people have tested positive for coronavirus.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and we are doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time," Holland America Line said of the four who had died of undisclosed causes in a statement shared by spokesperson Erik Elvejord.

Don’t bring a cruise ship to a navy battle — unless you’re fighting Venezuela.
A Venezuelan navy patrol boat is now sitting on the bottom of the Caribbean Sea after losing a bizarre encounter with an unarmed cruise ship, in what has turned into a high-seas game of finger-pointing.
The Venezuelan warship, called the Naiguata, intercepted the RCGS Resolute off the coast of Venezuela shortly after midnight on March 30, according to statements from both parties.
The Naiguata ordered the Resolute to change its course, leading to a tense stand-off between the two ships’ crews over whether they were in international or Venezuelan waters.

When I first read that I assumed a tiny navy patrol got smushed by a giant mega cruise ship. But size-wise they were evenly matched.
That cruise ship has visited Victoria when it was under prior ownership doing high-end Alaska runs.

Of all the cruise ships in the world they happened to choose the one with a reinforced ice-breaking hull. It's like the stories of the drunken lunkheads that pick fights with little people that turn out to be featherweight MMA champs.

I hope that if the cruise ship industry gets a bailout from the US that, in lieu of an equity position, they are forced to flag their ships in the US.
