So that's what happened to Astrid Braunschmidt (formerly CTV Vancouver Island and very briefly with BC Ferries).

If you drill down further you'll notice another couple of interesting people on their executive, including Keith Wells (also ex-CHEK, ex-Global TV sportscaster), and more interestingly from the standpoint of this forum I would expect, one Jeremy Loveday, ex-COV councilor, who is the "Exec Director Public Affairs, Destination Stewardship & Sustainability" - quite the title .

I see among the DGV management group is also ex-CHEK ex-Global sportscaster Keith Wells and for those wondering what happens to ex-COV councilors one Jeremy Loveday is also there. Among other things the following appears in his Bio:
Jeremy served eight years as a Victoria City Councilor and four years as a CRD Director, spearheading initiatives in affordable housing, climate action, active transportation, arts and culture, and sustainable economic development.
Offhand of the five bullet points mentioned above I am hard-pressed to recall in which if any of them he actually "spearheaded" anything.

Fun fact: Keith is the dude behind The Frame channel on Shaw/Rogers.

He's also the founder of the highly successful STNVideo firm here in town that was sold earlier this year for $150 mill USD. STNV is (or was) North America's leading online video platform, syndicating one billion news & sports video highlights per month to over 2,000 news outlets. Keith is a smart guy. DGV is lucky to have him.

Glad I don't have daughters. Glad my son is not celebrity obsessed.

A cashier at Thrifty’s was telling me the Swift mania feels off to her. She said no one person should have that sort of power, to be that idolized. I don’t even know how the conversation came up but it got me thinking.
Why are so many people so wrapped up in this?
It's simply because she has cast a very wide net for fans.
1. She's multi-generational, moms and daughters like her.
2. She makes "safe for work" music, you can't play Cardi B at work. So workplaces are highly exposed to her music.
3. She's considered wholesome, more so than Grande or Gomez. She's safe for tweens and younger.
4. She has country/pop crossover.
There isn't really much competiton in the same space. Maybe Kelly Clarkson was at one time.

Any worse than Beatlemania? They weren’t that good either.
I know I am about to date myself here but I can't resist.
The 4 of us in the '57 Chevy 2 door hardtop were band mates and we were between gigs. We rolled off the ferry in the summer of '65... headed for Lake Tahoe for some R&R. We stopped at Portland on the way down to pick up some concert tickets that we would attend on the way back a week later. There was only room for one acoustic guitar, some Canadian beer, a set of bongos and a 4 man tent in the Chevy, but that was all we needed as we were busy every night in the campgrounds entertaining the girls whose boyfriends were away in Vietnam.
On August 22 we took in the concert. Our seats were fantastic for $8 as we were close to the stage and could hear the lyrics clearly over the hoard of screaming girls. It was the only time that the Beatles played in Oregon ...and it is still the best concert that I have had the luck and privilege to attend.
As far as their talent was concerned, their music was new to us and it was definitely the most inspiring music of the era.
Priceless.

Compare Swift to Avril Lavigne.
Swift:
34 years old, artist since teenager
graduated high schoolonetear early(homeschooled)
no kids
never married
sings about boyfriends, love
does not swear
pop/country
Lavigne:
40 years old, artist since teenager
did not complete high school
no kids
married three times, engaged three times, divorced twice
sings about partying, not giving a f**k
drops f-bombs continually at live shows, drinks beer on stage
Goes on the Daddy podcast and talks about sleeping with guys
pop/punk
Now, I've never been to a Swift show but I've seen Avril a couple times (she has played Victoria at least 4 times), I'm a fan.
Avril has a pretty narrow demographic, mostly 25 to 40 year olds.
Swift just has a much wider band of fans, all ages. Including parents with money. That's all.

While IDKAFF about either of them - the daughter of course loves "Tay-Tay" - as they're not remotely in my wheelhouse, that is probably a great explanation, for the "Swiftie" appeal for sure. Not that I've ever bothered to wonder particularly, but if you do think about it for a minute those are all pretty good points.
On Global Vancouver news last night they interviewed numerous mother-daughter fans some from as far away as Texas, Toronto and even Australia. You can roll your eyes at the "music" (and I do!) but in terms of broad appeal not to mention her business acumen, you have to admit the woman knows what she's doing.
