Couple new pizza by the slice places opening soon:

- Pizza Garden - corner of Courtney and Government in the Custom House. (It looks like there may also be a new coffee shop or something going in the final retail spot along government street. There’s build out but unclear what exactly).

- Fresh Slice going in next to Tim Hortons on the 700 block of Fort st. Looks like it may be connected with some Smoke & Snack sorta convenience store business. Only a coupon blocks away from the new FreshSlice that opened in the 1600 block of Douglas about a month ago

There’s a fresh slice opening up by the Indian place on government as well, in Chinatown. Still wasn’t open when I was by there a few weeks ago.

Good margins on pizza, even better by the slice.

Probably a direct result of the drinking culture that Mike K always says is plaguing victoria. Nothing better after a night at the club than a couple of 2:00 am dodgy slices.

Striking out never tasted so bad. 😎

Discount pizza by the slice is a staple of economically depressed areas. It’s not something to celebrate, and to see a whole network of these places opening is not a good sign.

Pizza Garden is also a chain and much higher quality pizza than Fresh Slice as it is neopolitan style. Fresh slice is what you get at 2 am after a night out. Looks like fresh slice is trying to make an aggressive comeback after all their franchise owners left and started Local Pizza.

Big dough is at stake — both literally and figuratively — as the owners of Freshslice Pizza pursue a pair of former franchisees in B.C. Supreme Court for breach of contract in relation to the overnight rebranding of nine pizza restaurants.

This week, a judge refused to grant Freshslice — a B.C.-based pizza chain — an injunction that would have shuttered all HellCrust Pizza and Yummy Slice Pizza locations pending the hearing of a lawsuit.

Although Justice Christopher Giaschi found Freshslice has —at first blush — a strong argument against its former business partners, the judge said the bigger pizza chain had failed to prove it would suffer "irreparable harm" if the injunctions were refused.

The legal battle sheds light on the mysterious transformation of three pizzerias in Burnaby, Vancouver and Maple Ridge in the night between March 31 and April 1, 2021 — they went to bed as Freshslice and woke up HellCrust.

If Pizza Garden is still maintaining their former standards then they definitely aren't discount. They offered a decent slice, and they were charging only a bit more than the cheeze-whiz-and-ketchup-on-styrofoam places.

The lowest common denominator, like cheque cashing places.

Ann, the owner of "Culis Pho & More" at 153-2745 Veteran's Memorial Parkway in Langford, passed away earlier this week at Royal Jubilee Hospice of cancer.

I'm sad to hear this.

A strange aside – in the last 2 years I made 5 attempts to get some lunch there on a weekday and they were closed unexpectedly all 5 times. However, prior to ~2020 I remember stopping in for bubble tea and banh mi and my wife and I talked to Ann's dad. An interesting little shop.

Quigley said one of his favourite things about Chorizo & Co. is the fun atmosphere.

“It’s a very casual environment. The service is impeccable, but the music’s loud. It’s fun. It’s vibrant. We have fun and hopefully everyone else picks up on that.”

He described the fact that they found a buyer so quickly “bittersweet”. Their realtor had thought it would take a long time to sell, but it only took three weeks for a firm offer.

A new restaurant transferring from Langford will be coming in, but Quigley doesn’t want to ruin their surprise by giving names.

After the closure, Quigley said he plans to take time off and spend it with his daughters Lola, 13, and Poppy, 9.

From Facebook's Vic Hospitality Group:

Uni Modern Japanese set to open soon at Lower Yates and Wharf (previously J.R. Slims)

Same team behind Toro.

That's great!

So there's the sushi place just across the street, the Japanese place further north on Store, the Korean place on Yates in the former Matisse space, and now this place. That's a lot of Asian food in one stretch!

The most cursed restaurant location in the CRD. Does anyone want to take bets on when Uni announces its closure?

I think a nice Japanese spot has a better chance than most at thriving here.

New business going into the old Bubby Roses space on Quadra.

Via our friends at Scout mag.

“Emmaline’s is the new Victoria-based concept from Elizabeth Bryan – the powerhouse behind former, sorely missed Mount Pleasant spot, Dock Lunch – with business partners Fabio Caboclo and Daniel Peres.”

...Emmaline’s will serve up neighbourhood bistro food and a welcome that makes everyone feel like a regular. We were inspired by our favourite neighbourhoods and “locals” in our favourite cities, including New York, New Orleans and Vancouver. We have two Brazilian partners, so expect to see a Sao Paulo influence in our menu, decor, pop-ups and playlists...
