Yup yup and yup. What are we pushing on VI now for population.....900,000? With service and transpo infrastructure mostly built at a time when we had two thirds of that number. Something has to break, and it will. Imagine we get hammered with a big 7++ earthquake with nothing but that awful goat trail known as the malahat highway serving as the main north - south artery to and from the CRD? And yes just getting a mainstream camping site on the island these days is almost like winning a lottery. Crazy.

When I was a kid in the late 1950s, my family used to stay at Grey Crest for two weeks! There were small cabins there back then and lots of trees. My grandfather knew the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Herb Grey.  We'd go into Parksville to go to Donks Ice Cream shop. Then all the cabins were demolished and most of the trees cut down and it lost its appeal. Back in the late 1980s we'd stay for a few days at Tigh-Na-Mara. We're not campers and that place was great. We wouldn't be a able to afford either place these days.

Here's what the cabins used to look like. They were pretty new I think as we have pics of much older cabins than that one. The fellow on the far right, his son was for a time the PR director for the Phoenix Coyotes.

Today: 19 closed southbound at Buckley Bay, luckily there’s the 19A.

Malahat single-lane at Goldstream due to MVI this afternoon.

4 closed at Cameron Lake due to wildfire. Human caused? No other explanation.

Yes, if there is no lightning recorded, all fires are deemed human-caused.

Health Canada just needs to put additional warning labels on cigarettes: May Cause Fires. Problem solved.

My favorite stretch of highway on the island bar none, it brings back so many good memories; I haven't taken 19 in years probably since I last skied Mt Washington and that has to be nearly fifteen years ago. There is something so relaxing and familiar about 19A, quite aside from the ocean-side view which is reason enough to prefer that route all by itself.

Would it be possible to teach other animals to start fires?

Pretty sure cats would be burning down houses left right and centre if they could.

I put the proposition to our cats - one is rarin' to go - laser eyes on standby. The other unfortunately has a dependency problem and was too out of it to understand what I was asking....

The only "Del Mar" bluff/foreshore collapse I know of occurred in San Diego. Not aware of anything like that in Campbell River and we've stayed at this CR property in the past.
