Have people been crying out for these, have residents and businesses been saying people have trouble finding places?  FFS, people use their phone now for everything, navigation-wise.   What a waste of money.

i don't understand the need for these signs other then to waste money.. they are big and bulky and to me they look out of place.. i haven't seen them personally but the image of the one in the inner harbour looks like it just blocks a chunk of the sidewalk

They're art canvasses for desperate graffiti taggers.

I do find such signs useful in European cities. And our phones don't work in Europe, so they are helpful. I don't use a phone for navigation, I prefer a paper map.

I'm wondering if Rock Bay or Burnside would even be worth mentioning on such markers.

You may be right. After seeing the world class thrills of North Park tourists may not find much to delight them in those sections of the city.  ;)

That's so funny. So you walk that 240 metres only to...stand at the Phillips brewery? Is this a quiet promo for Phillips and its upcoming tasting room?

The arena is also either 550 or 600 metres from the Chinatown gate. There is no route that equates with a 660m walk.

To me these posts look more like a solution looking for a problem. Who the heck needs to know North Park is 380 metres away? And what in North Park is worth walking to, specifically from the Chinatown gate, and specifically 380 metres away?

What in the heck is City Hall thinking here?

And 280 meters before you get to the arena, you'll magically enter North Park.

North Park, it must be as big and gorgeous as Beacon Hill Park, right? I mean, it's labelled on a giant sign next to the awesome looking Chinatown gate so it must be special.

:P
More important than Fernwood, since it didn't make it onto the sign.

Is North Park that little park with the used hypodermic needle box, right next to the grungy Wellburn's dumpsters?

According to the City of Victoria's wayfinding sign, North Park is a Romeo's restaurant.

Here is the strategy they employed to come up with these.

Personally, I like to think of North Park as the courtyard/green space at my condo building, but I don't recall being asked for my input into this new signage...not even what my traditional name for North Park is.

"Rock Bay Landings" - just a easy walk from downtown for afternoon tea........meet the locals and fine dinning in our secure lobby. Plenty of FREE shopping cart parking to be had

The arena is also either 550 or 600 metres from the Chinatown gate. There is no route that equates with a 660m walk.

I just measured it precisely as a pedestrian might actually walk it: cross Fisgard at Government, go right up Fisgard to Blanshard, go left on Blanshard (don't cheat at the corner), cross Caledonia, go right across Blanshard, go diagonally toward the arena entrance. I get 650-something every time.

I assume the 150m distance to the Empress Hotel just 50m across the street was calculated in the same fashion. South to the mid-block crosswalk, across Government, and then up to the entrance. They were trying to be very accurate with the actual walking distances, in other words.

Hmm, I followed that route on Google Maps and end up with 600 in the shadow of Rock Stuff and Shell. The entrance would be 610.

How did they get 660?

Look I do not care much about the distances. But why are we sending people to “Rock Bay” and Burnside?

And as Mike says, what do they expect to find in North Park?

Like I said, this is a solution looking for a problem.

If I were a tourist and decided to walk 380 meters to some place called North Park I'd be confused as fudge once I got there. What are they thinking at City Hall? Who signed off on this?
