Cool FB group for those who want to wander down the history of CHEK TV. Unsurprisingly its called the ex-CHEK Group. Technically you have to be an ex-staffer to post on it although they invited me due to my family connection so I periodically post material from dad's time at the station. Some fascinating old pics and video from local TV from years/decades past:

Historically their mandate officially was certainly to report and focus on the 'local' news, or 'the island's news' I suppose was the much later tagline, however I presume like Global Vancouver and many other local outlets which have been doing likewise re: events south of the 49th, what happens in the US either way in November will have major impacts far beyond their borders, arguably above all here in Canada as they are our most important economic, political and strategic partner.
It certainly qualifies as news and if we're being honest probably draws more eyeballs than another story about more bike lanes or Oak Bay shooting down yet another new building proposal etc. At the very least short of a major crime or disaster story locally, I can see why that might be a lead story.

This week bike lanes and housing will be at the forefront of Oak Bay news, coincidentally.

I do agree it's news, but should it be the main headline of "Victoria" news? no. Anyways, on weekends, their broadcasts are mostly mashup cbc news from all across the place but here.
And seriously, who cares about their segment "weather around the world" and the fact that it's raining in Acapulco? We all have internet, it's not 1950 anymore.
They should cut the local broadcast to half an hour, get rid of the 2 guys on publicuty stunts and show more news of the region/island. If they want infomercials they can have their own separate show. I usually only watch the first 5 minutes then I switch to a different channel because the remaining 55 minutes are irrelevant.
And that super dramatic reporter in Nanaimo: Today on the news, a family lost their keys in the river, it's such a tragedy and a loss for the community. *eyeroll*

Agreed. There are a plethora of sources for BC, Canada and international news. Keep it simple. Let CHEK be the number one source for Vancouver Island news.

Yeah and therein lies the problem basically the old media (radio/TV) business model we grew up with from the early 60's to the mid-90's or so is broken. I don't disagree with really any of your suggestions however all major media in Canada is in retreat and semi-permanent layoff mode including Bell, Corus, Shaw, Nordstar (the old Torstar org) etc., and few if any have figured out what - or if - there is anything they can do about it.
Technology has changed, radically, viewing/listening habits have changed and above all consumers both real and potential have and are changing in terms of their preferences for what and where they obtain any information be it daily news, weather or just the concert listings.
I'm at the younger end of the boomer generation around whom that old MSM model was built. My kid is 26 and the how and when and where she consumes information is radically different than how we did it. Add to all that the fact CHEK is not affiliated with a major network and is a small employee-owned entity floating about out there in cyber media-land and they have a whole bunch of other concerns that Bell or Corus (for now) do not.

Lots of the CHEK stories do have typos, I think they fix most before reading on air. Although in this case, the word is pronounced the same.
