Snow White — like all live-action remakes — doesn't deserve to exist

Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot-led film is far from the worst remake, but still hardly worth the price of admission

46% from critics at Rotten Tomatoes. But Zegler is mostly praised for her performance.

You don't need to be a Disney fan to be aware of Snow White. The movie has been making headlines for years, typically for all the wrong reasons.

Whether it's Rachel Zegler's divisive comments about the 1937 classic, Gal Gadot's stance on the Gaza war, or the many changes Disney has made to the story to update it for the present day, there's a lot of negative buzz surrounding this one. Throw in the fact reviews haven't been good and Snow White's opening weekend is off to a sleepy start.

According to Variety (via Toonado.com), the movie only drew an estimated $3.5 million from Thursday previews screenings; that's a long way off what Aladdin ($7 million), The Lion King ($23 million), Beauty and the Beast ($16.3 million) made, for example.

Trouble is-a brewin’ for Disney’s Snow White in its box office debut.

After getting stung by critics and a not-so-great audience scores, Disney’s live-action remake of its iconic 1937 animated film may only reap $45 million in its domestic box office debut. That’s on par with Tim Burton’s Dumbo, which was considered a major disappointment.

Starring Rachel Zegler in the titular role and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Snow White had been tracking to open to cross at $50 million, although Disney had been conservative in putting out a range of $45 million and $55 million. Globally, still hopes to clear $100 million in its launch.

Snow White did not impress critics with its 44% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but even with a higher 74% audience score, the movie is in fact currently bombing at the box office, at least according to these initial figures.

Snow White brought in $87 million in its opening weekend globally, with just $43 million domestically. That may not mean much out of context, but compared to the other slew of recent live-action Disney adaptations, that’s definitely in “bomb” territory, at least for now. Here’s the list along the same opening weekend time period domestically:

  • The Lion King - $191 million
  • Beauty and the Beast - $174 million
  • Alice in Wonderland - $116 million
  • The Jungle Book - $103 million
  • The Little Mermaid - $95 million
  • Aladdin – $91 million
  • Maleficent - $69 million
  • Cinderella - $67 million
  • Snow White and the Hunstman - $56 million
  • Dumbo $46 million
  • Snow White - $43 million
  • Mufasa: The Lion King - $35 million

There are very few ways to spin that. Snow White is close to the worst-performing live-action Disney adaptation ever, doing not even half or a quarter as well as the higher-up ones on the list, and reviewed more poorly than essentially all of them, which is no doubt a contributor here.

Few eps in, talk about intense. The scene with the shrink, I had to watch it twice!
Love all the single shot camera work and the casting too.

I’ve added a show on crave called The Pitt, which I wasn’t going to bother with but a friend suggested it’s really intense as well, compared it to The Bear but the er world instead.

I've watched a season or so, not bad.  A bit over the top.

Over the top is the second season of the Night Agent. Disappointing after the first season.

Reacher S3 is better than S2, IMO. I liked S1 best of the 3 (S3 finale is today, I think, haven't watched it yet).
