Yeah those things happen fast and show no mercy. Every tailgater, texter, and otherwise overly confident "N" driver clearly has never experienced a car crash. Once you go through that experience you gain an incredible amount of respect for the road ...and physics.

Now about that crash, how do we know it was a collision with a pole? Has this been reported somewhere?

Know it all.

Eyewitnesses to the aftermath tell us a pole was definitely struck.

Some Facebook posters claim to have knowledge of alcohol being a factor.

^about on par for that Range Rover I got on my dash cam a while back.

20 year old woman in the passenger seat died.

24 year old male driver taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Isn't it sad how alcohol deaths are so often not the drunk driver?

I thought it was because drunk drivers do not tense up before or during impact...

Reminder:

GVSD61 and Saanich SD63 schools are on Spring Break from March 10-21.  School zone speed limits are not in effect during this time.

Sooke SD62 schools are on their Spring Break from March 17-21.  School zone speed limits ARE in effect during this time.

It's up to you to figure out what district you're driving through.

I think school zone speed limits are only posted for public schools, not private.

I'm pretty certain that posted school zones are at Glenlyon Norfolk (at least the Beach Drive campus) and SMUS junior school.

Ah!  There you go.  I wasn't entirely sure.

From Steve Wallace:

Private-school students are not protected by school zones when the public statutory school holiday occurs, despite the private schools being in full session. The police are unable to issue speeding tickets in school zones where private school students are in session while public schools are on a statutory spring break holiday. Do school districts that opt for a two week spring break expect the police to issue tickets to drivers when it is a statutory school day with no students or teachers present? Of course not, but it would be legal for police to do so. Thankfully, constables have better judgment than to issue such violation citations.

Did you witness it or the aftermath?  What might have happened?
