No word on the vehicle type yet?
Speed limits can't stop these sorts of crashes despite what the slower speed group wants us to believe.

Looks kind of like an early 90's Celica, although it's very hard to tell from that distance.

Chief Civilian Director Deploys Investigators to Saanich
INFORMATION BULLETIN
Independent Investigations Office
For Immediate Posting
May 12, 2014
SURREY – The IIO confirms it has deployed investigators to an incident that occurred this morning in Saanich, B.C.
Shortly before 5:30 a.m., a Central Saanich Police officer observed a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on West Saanich Road, between Spartan Road and Hartland Road. According to the IIO notification made by police, the officer made a U-turn with the intent of conducting a traffic stop.
Shortly thereafter, the officer located the vehicle off road. The driver of the vehicle, a male adult (affected person), sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital.
The IIO was notified at 6:30 a.m. and has deployed investigators to conduct a preliminary investigation. They will be supported by additional IIO investigators including dedicated specialists for Affected Persons, Forensics and Traffic Reconstruction.
There are road closures in the area. Currently, local police are processing the scene and will release it as soon as possible.
The IIO will work cooperatively with Saanich Police as per the Memorandum of Understanding. Saanich Police will maintain full jurisdiction over any parallel investigation into the actions of the affected person.

Interesting, no mention of that this morning.

Not an expert, but they might've had to sit on that detail until IIO asserted jurisdiction and decided how to release the information.

Is this as a result of the police having instigated a pursuit of the vehicle that had subsequently crashed?

That press release does not suggest a pursuit was initiated although I'm sure it will be a line of investigation. The fact the police car initiated a pull-over on a vehicle that shortly thereafter wrecked is enough of a police nexus for IIO's mandate to kick in.
VicPD had a similar file last year.

Ya, seems like a good oversight. At the end of the day, I can never really blame a police pursuit on a person's crash, but police have to consider innocents in the way when they considering starting or continuing a pursuit.

Besides, are not emergency vehicles (police, ambulances, fire trucks) limited in an emergency to merely 50% over the speed limit (else despite their status, risk censure for speeding)? Nowhere near enough to catch a serious speeder I'd of thought (so not much point in a 'hot chase').

Not by statute, perhaps by policy in some agencies. Police, however, should never, in this province, initiate a pursuit merely for speeding. It has to be a serious offense where the threat to public safety to not pursue outweighs the threat to public safety to initiate/continue a pursuit.

The car looks like an Mercedez-Benz SL 500 in the TC pictures. The entire front end is gone!
I'm sure the occupant is in very big trouble, health wise.

I think the pursuit of the car that was involved in the downtown nightclub shooting last year was called off. Police here don't like to pursue. There's a good chance that intelligence on people related to the car will lead them to the perps anyhow. (Unless it was stolen).

It was. Gipper was speaking about the one guy (former Causeway magician) that died at Blanshard and Cloverdale in a stolen car.
