NANAIMO — An 80-year-old woman has died after being hit by a vehicle at Woodgrove Centre.

The incident occurred Thursday, March 21 just after 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot by the Nanaimo Walmart, when the woman was struck by a passing blue Dodge pickup truck.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said driver, a 21-year-old, stopped immediately and remained at the scene, cooperating with police.

“It was witnessed by several people, they called in the incident. The injuries were catastrophic [to the victim] and the individual died at the scene.”

Police have ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors on behalf of the driver.

It’s still unclear the exact nature of the incident and how the truck and woman came into contact.

O’Brien added the vehicle was seized and will undergo a mechanical inspection, to determine whether its condition played a role in the crash.

Those with information can call 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2024-8703.

Video of the Bay-Douglas accident. The sedan was screaming towards that intersection. Two pedestrians were nearly hit who were waiting to cross Bay.

Brutal.

Blindly running a red light at high speed, and with a cop car right there...

Car looks to be speeding.  Two pedestrians were lucky to be clear of the wreck.

Cop appears about 45 seconds later.

Oh, wow.

There is no by-line on the article. And the video did not identify a reporter.

Are they using AI for written content as well? Shouldn’t accredited media be identifying the use of AI?

Are you saying that isn't a cop car turning right on Douglas shortly before the crash?

If that's a police car then it would have been heading north on Douglas between Bay and Hillside just as the speeding car would have been heading south along that same block (or along those same two blocks, if you prefer to take the Kings Road intersection into account).

Actually, they go past one another maybe even before the Kings Road intersection.

Oh ya. The police car that showed up came from the south though.

Here's a frame showing the taillights of the northbound cop car and the headlights of the southbound speeder together:

All things considered, I'm just saying it wasn't the best moment to be running a red light.

The truck was only doing at best 2/3 the speed of the car, those distances might match.
