It’s nuts, he’s not wrong.

But it has been this way for quite some time now. Saanich is playing catch up and that’s where the problems are most notable lately. Soon, most of the two lane streets in Saanich will be one lane in each direction with predictable results.

Only Quadra and McKenzie haven’t been reduced, yet.

Something is happening at Royal Oak Burial Park, or at least the road leading up to it.

Does anyone know what’s up?

Looked like a roll on bin truck full of yard waste tipped. Lots of emergency vehicles and throwing of absorbing materials.

Saw on fb he was taken to hospital as a precaution. I was driving to the ferry while this was unfolding, looked pretty bad from the highway but that new overpass sure is coming along!

Douglas is closed between Yates and View.

VicPD say they expect it to remain closed well into the AM commute.

It was an MVI, but there are no details. You can see a Blue Bird van taxi parked alongside the sidewalk

The Westshore:

Hwy 18 crash kills Metchosin teen—a lacrosse player and the former mayor's grandson

Daniel Ranns via GoFundMe

Daniel Ranns died after his small westbound pickup was struck by an eastbound one-tonne truck on Hwy 18 on Sunday afternoon. Ranns, 18, the grandson of former longtime Metchosin mayor John Ranns, recently graduated from Royal Bay Secondary in Colwood.

Ranns, an eight-term mayor, said that the family is devastated and the the teen was on a trip to look into buying a trailer that he could live in on the family farm. He told the Times Colonist that the 6’5” Daniel was often carrying younger family members on his shoulders, and that the family appreciates the love and support coming in but asks for privacy.

The young lacrosse player, whose parents both coach lacrosse, was remembered by his Westshore Bears coach as a hard worker with a “heart of gold.” JDF Lacrosse remembered him as a player and assistant coach who had a “warm heart and unwavering kindness" that touched everyone around him.

Family friends began a fundraiser, which has nearly reached its $45k goal.

Per police, who did not name Daniel Ranns in their release, a witnesses indicated his vehicle may have drifted into the other lane. Crews tried to free the teen from the wreckage, but he was later pronounced dead. The roadway was shut for some time and the driver of the other truck was hospitalized with what RCMP say appeared to be minor injuries.

Daniel Ranns died after his small westbound pickup was struck by an eastbound one-tonne truck on Hwy 18 on Sunday afternoon.

That’s not what police reported. They said witnesses saw the westbound compact pick-up drift into the oncoming lane of the one-tonne eastbound pickup. Later on in the article above it says the compact “may” have drifted into the oncoming path of the larger truck. Is the family contesting what happened?

Here’s the police statement:

On November 3, 2024 at 2:22 p.m., the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP responded to a report of a head-on collision in the eastbound lane of Highway 18. According to witnesses, a westbound compact pickup truck drifted into the oncoming lane where it impacted an eastbound one-tonne pickup. The compact pickup truck came to rest in the ditch, the driver was entrapped and crews worked to extricate them while the other driver was taken to hospital with apparently minor injuries. The driver of the compact pickup was later pronounced deceased despite life-saving efforts by first responders. No one else was injured in the crash.

All highway traffic was shutdown to allow emergency crews to work safely however has since been reopened.

The investigation remains in the early stages and all causal factors are not yet know.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision, specifically the driver of a white truck that braked and swerved towards the ditch to avoid the collision while they were travelling eastbound towards Duncan to come forward and speak with investigators.

Anyone with any information or dash cam footage of the crash who has not yet spoke with police is asked to contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.

I think the WestShore piece just paraphrases the police report.  The family might not be involved in any of the above writing.

Whoever wrote that, they got the first paragraph very wrong.

There’s editorializing happening there. The victim in the one-tonne has to live with what happened to them, so to read that someone is implying it was they who struck the young person’s vehicle, when police already said it wasn’t their fault, isn’t right and can make the healing process so much worse.

This type of scenario is a nightmare scenario for motorists. 100km/h highway, small margin of error. Young driver just happens to veer into an oncoming lane?

Initial police report is just based on one witness.

Maybe the WS just wanted to step that back slightly.  They did not attribute fault to the other driver.

There are a couple main reasons one might drift into the oncoming lane:

  • Falling asleep at the wheel
  • Poor attention - using smartphone, or occasionally paying attention to others parts of your vehicle, like reaching into the back seat for something.

Unfortunately both of those are quite common in the youngest, least experienced drivers.

The article says he "drifted"....is that different than "veer" ?

I'm serious here. Drifting is something that might happen while you are on your phone. Veering is something that might happen to avoid an animal.

Unfortunately that is also a rookie mistake.  You just gotta hit that thing.  You can't be "veering" strongly at 100kmh.

Drifted/veered. At 100km/h, it makes no difference.

I’m just saying, it is inappropriate to say, the other motorist struck the young driver, when police say the facts suggest otherwise. That’s all I’m saying.

When you’re on the road I don’t care how old you are, how confident you are, what your skill level is. We’re all sharing an equal responsibility. To bend the truth of a serious accident, because a young person was killed, is not right.

I'm not sure what you are taking issue with.  These are the only two sentences describing the collision.  The first one talks about the "strike" and the second modifies to say that Ranns was probably the cause.  Maybe you want the first sentence to read?:

Danile Ranns died after his small westbound pickup struck an eastbound one-tonne truck...
