The Capital Regional District is contributing $2 million and partnering with the Habitat Acquisition Trust to ensure a 20-hectare property remains untouched forest land.

In total, $3.4 million will be spent to acquire the Mountain Road Forest property, which is situated between Beaver Lake and Prospect Lake, just west of Interurban Road.

The Capital Regional District’s parks committee meets today to consider implementing parking fees at nine more area parks.

At present, only Thetis Lake and Sooke Potholes have parking fees, which are seasonal and in effect from May 1 to Sept. 30. The cost is $2.25 a day or $20 for a season’s pass.

i think it would be very good if the season pass is transferable - or can be used at all CRD parks.  or even all municipal parks too where there is a parking fee.  not sure if there are any.  willows beach should be paid parking.   with revenues to fund improvements.

in those cases we need to blast out more revenue generators parking spaces.

Inadequate parking, no crappers, poorly marked trails, no on-site locations to pick up trail maps, and on and on it goes ... if you're going to charge  for something, you'd better actually have something facility-wise to offer your paying customer.

And not to put too fine a point on it, but we already pay through the nose for these parks with our taxes ... it's just because the CRD taxes shows up as a single line item (which is a whole other story) that you don't get to see the specific break-down ... but you DO pay.

but i pay even if i never visit a park.  that's why pay parking is a good idea.  bike there and it's no fee.

and yes they should put decent park trail maps online so you can follow with your phone.

The Capital Regional District’s parks committee declined to endorse parking fees for more local green spaces on Wednesday, instead giving unanimous approval to a motion that acknowledges taxation as the main method of funding park maintenance.

So everyone pays, even if you never visit any CRD parks.

It's always been that way, paying for regional parks through taxation.

Not saying it's appropriate for folks who never visit parks, but note that at no point was there ever a suggestion that having folks pay for parking would result in removal of CRD parks tax from ones yearly financial obligations to the CRD.

I'd even support a 100% user pay concept for regional parks, although I suspect the reason the powers that be don't ever go there is because parks cost far more to operate than a piddly parking fee could cover.

I'm not sure that everyone pays today?  How much of the CRD budget comes from property taxes?  If the CRD had implemented a parking fee, what percentage of people drive to the park vs. bike etc?
