Someone has just seven weeks to claim a $1-million winning lottery ticket purchased on Vancouver Island.

The 6/49 ticket, set to expire at midnight on March 18, 2021, it was purchased on the north Island.

Late Vancouver Island woman's family court-bound over her $3M lottery jackpot

Two family members are heading to B.C. Supreme Court to get what they consider to be their share of their deceased mother’s $3-million lottery winnings

You’d think if you were suddenly into $3 million and not exactly young, you’d make a will. You’d also think mediation could resolve this, based on precedent. But I guess lawyers need money too.

The better-us-than-the-bad-guys rationale gives elected officials a good argument, or at least a convenient one. It was first used by B.C. politicians a century ago when they ended Prohibition (and bootlegging) by creating the system of government liquor stores we still have today. We’ll use the money to build schools, hospitals and $789-million museums, they said.

Gambling, which lives on the shady side of Morality Street, was allowed to exist because it paid for good works. When government got into the lottery business 40 years ago, the profits all went (at least for a while) to amateur sports, recreation and culture. Before BCLC was tasked with running things in 2002, community groups competed with each other to volunteer at (and get money from) B.C.’s commercial bingo halls. (Some of us are still lightly buzzed from the dauber ink.)

Gambling, which lives on the shady side of Morality Street,

If the state's promotion of gambling, alcohol, drugs, and every other manner of personal self-destruction = "the shady side of Morality Street" then I don't think I want to know what slithers around in the darkest back alleys.

The argument is a good one in that many online casinos rip off their players. Bringing that money into a fair and regulated environment is best for everyone. What I don't think they have demonstrated however is that gamblers have moved.

I suspect that consumers will decide for themselves if they “trust” offshore casinos more than the local provincial legislators.

I’ll never forget the day my dad called me from home, letting me know I might see him getting arrested on the news when the fuzz busted one of their “gentleman’s clubs” lol.

^ I was in one when it got busted. I headed for the back stairs and there was a cop standing at the top.

I filled up my cheeks with air and ran right towards him making like I was about to puke.

He stepped aside and opened the door for me.

Good times.

Only the government is allowed to do this crime of taking a rake! It’s so bizarre. If they made it all illegal and took bribes to look the other way it would be more honest vs having a monopoly through threat of violence. Sheesh it does sound crazy when I type that out!

Yep, that’s the only thing that made any of it illegal, the house was taking a cut. Taxman doesn’t like that.

The bribe to look the other way could be called taxes to make it seem more civilized.

Actually, raking the pot isn't the only thing making such undertakings illegal.

Any hint of a payment to the "house" will make things illegal instantly.

Even fun times like poker tournaments disguised as "contests" are prone to investigation, as something as simple as the "house" charging $10.00 per deck of cards is seen as a form of rake.

Gaming investigators have seen it all ... $50.00 hot dogs, $25.00 beers, a "service" charge for heat and light ... all seen as a rake in the eyes of the law, and all illegal in B.C.

It gets complicated, but best chances of not getting arrested are pre-announced prize monies awarded for placing 1st, 2nd, etc.

Although that prize money usually comes out of an "entry fee", which is where gaming investigators start to see the house taking a rake once more.

He could lose the girlfriend, I suppose.  He's a different man today, than he was 4 days ago.

The owner of the gas station that sold the ticket gets a cool $500K for selling it.

I hope he shares that with all his employees.
