A B.C. nurse will have limited access to opioids upon returning to the job after diverting the drugs from the workplace and practising while impaired, says the regulatory body for the profession.

The nurse—who is not named due to medical privacy laws—diverted opioids between January and May 2024, according to a consent agreement with the B.C. College of Nurses and Midwives approved Wednesday.

The college says the registrant was diagnosed with a disability with a “causal relationship to the practice issues” and will undergo treatment.

“The inquiry committee recognizes that nurses and midwives, like any member of the public, may grapple with health issues that may impact their ability to practice safely, competently, and ethically,” an online summary of the agreement reads.

From Island Health:

The first two Physician Assistants in BC, Fu Wu (Fred) Bai (left) and Eric Demers (right), have joined a team of dedicated and compassionate care providers to help provide emergency services at Saanich Peninsula Hospital (SPH).

Fred Bai has been a physician assistant in Manitoba since 2012 after pursuing a postgraduate degree from the University of Manitoba. Previously, he worked overseas as a medical geneticist, and cared for patients as a registered nurse for several years.

Eric Demers became a physician assistant in 2010 while serving with the Canadian Armed Forces. Demers will support the SPH ED team and also continue to provide medical care to remote First Nations communities in Canada’s northern regions.

More than 74,000 Canadians have died on health-care wait lists since 2018: report

At least 15,474 Canadians died in 2023-24 alone before receiving various surgeries or diagnostic scans. The true number is likely double

I don’t have one yet. I only have a form email thanking me for my application to be on a waiting list.

In Communist times, you’d have to sign up your kid for stuff, so that when an adult, they’d eventually get the service or the product dad signed them up for. Maybe.

It's good to be happy with the lowest level of healthcare, ever, and with the worst healthcare metrics among our wealthy western nation peers.

I wish I was that easily pacified. I still remember what it used to be like.

Lupurus: Make sure that you have the Nurse set up a proper set of blood tests, scans (dont miss bone density if you are approaching 50). A full cardiac work up should be done even if you are younger. But obviously up to you.

I am curious what your nurse has already set up for you as a regular checkup if you dont mind sharing.

Don’t make lupurus blush, B, you know full well you can’t get a full barrage of tests like that in our system. :)

Our system simply doesn’t offer that level of care. I got laughed out of the room by the doc at a walk in clinic when I asked for a complete check up.

The good news is, you can pay $2,500 and have a private doctor order the tests, though. You’ll learn more about your health from that one visit alone, than you will over years of repeated visits to a very good, caring top 5% public doctor.

I have not visited a doctor in 33 years.

If you are having an annual physical you are hogging our pathetic resources.

Comrade: Slow down.

No such thing as annual physicals.

I booked an appointment with my GP yesterday for next week, no issues with access. Can choose between a phone or in person consult. Book online, takes one minute.

Vic Watcher: First of all I dont see how I am hogging "our" resources. My doctor is in Seatle and I have some specialty matters looked after at the Mayo.

But getting annual physical probably in the wrong run saves a lot of stress on our medical resources. Treating stage one lung cancer is a hell of a lot cheaper than treating stage three or four. Preventing a stroke is a lot cheaper than dealing with people who have survived a major stroke. The list of cost saving for early prevention is long.

How is online blood pressure readings or self prostrate exam done online. And why are you not doing regular annual or otherwise health screenings.

What doctor does blood pressure in the office? They want you to monitor that at home these days for more accurate results.

You can check your own prostate, it’s easy. Lots of YouTube videos.

As I mentioned, you can choose phone or in person consult based on schedule and needs.

I'm not sure YouTube gives you the right videos for that.
