Word on the street is the driver suffered a sudden stroke, albeit a mild one. Not sure about the validity but I overheard two people talking about it at a bar. That would be an odd thing to just pull out of thin air so maybe there's some truth to that.

Anyways, it's a miracle nobody was injured. This was an epic Frogger move on the driver's part, that's for sure.

Guessing that it's a stroke is not an odd thing at all – strokes are a common cause of sudden debilitation in 60-somethings.

The entire Strathcona/Sticky Wicket facility has shut down due only to what is described as "construction issues."

The hotel is currently undergoing a reno.

Thanks for the heads up Mike, I've let my colleague know to expect a call from our client... seeing as he's the CPR on this reno...

Yes, they plan to re-open tomorrow or Saturday.

It could be a water-related issue but that's unconfirmed.

Was there a Prawn infestation?

Never mind, I'm mixing up my 'District 9' with 'DISTRIKT' again.

It’s the end of the road for nightclubs at this space, at least for the foreseeable future. Distrikt will not re-emerge post-COVID.

That's the loss of a pretty significant live music venue.

Yup, it’ll remain available for bookings, but it won’t operate as a nightclub any longer.

Plenty of chatter regarding high insurance premiums given high profile incidents that occurred there in the recent past (pre COVID).

Ah, so music promoters can still book the space, but run the event themselves?

Given that asking someone out who thinks you are ugly is now considered sexual assault I am not surprised.

Do we have many promoters in town that run the event as well?

It's likely, at least from the insurance standpoint, that ticketed, live events carry an entirely different insurance requirement (usually per-event) than does an "open door" drinking establishment playing recorded music through any given week.

Even back in the "old days", this particular venue always rotated between ticketed (live) "one-off" special events, and just a place to drink (heavily) and dance to recorded music.

Still ... one of the largest nightclubs in the province closing down at least 50% of their beverage operation isn't something that should go unnoticed in Victoria's post COVID business and entertainment recovery process.

With almost all of Victorias largest live venues still closed down, it remains to be seen if Victoria will ever recover what we had pre-COVID.

There are a lot of big local arts organizations, theatres, and presenters that have maintained a brave face throughout COVID, but there is still a substantial possibility that we will see a wave of last minute announcements similar to this recent DISTRIKT announcement, indicating that certain arts organizations, venues, theatres, and special events will simply not be able to re-open or re-establish as we move forward from COVID.

I think folks would be surprised (shocked?) if they actually knew how precarious the situation is right now for the larger arts organizations and larger venues in town.
