I don't want to judge but they should hang the people who let this building sit empty.

I suppose it will all get sorted out in the court of public opinion.

Would be an ideal site for a tent, tarp and pallet shop.

Do they still have the nooses in bastion square? If not the Maritime Museum folk I'm sure know how to make one up no problem.

Nope, the anti-noose bylaw is in effect. No noose is good noose.

I think it might be politically incorrect to set up the nooses in tent ville? Although yes conveniently also courthouse adjacent.

This historic vessel need to be in our Maritime Museum.

Either that or restore it to active duty.

OTTAWA — The Laurier II, with a rich and until recently noble history, floats off Vancouver Island’s east coast as a mysterious symbol of federal government inaction on the growing national problem of derelict vessels.

The ship, now apparently abandoned and floating in Deep Bay near Qualicum Beach, was built in a Quebec shipyard in the 1930s to serve as an RCMP patrol vessel to target drug and alcohol smugglers.

When the Second World War began in 1939, the ship was transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy, and after the war served on the West Coast as a federal department of fisheries patrol ship, armed with a “12-pounder” long gun and a .303 machine gun.

^ this google maps image of the fake wreck in the inner harbour got me thinking the exact same thing. what if the maritime museum were moved to the old power house at rock bay, and an old derelict was restored, and either kept on the harbour there (like the hms belfast) or in a drydock where people could walk under it like the ss great britain, replica golden hind or cutty sark? a wreck probably wouldn't need to be hauled up, with a short google search I found that there seem to be more than enough historic derelicts around. that seems like a good location considering the open space & the shipyard just across the harbour.

You're kidding right? These concepts you suggest require much imagination, creativity, a bit of daring and a dash of innovation - all things that this town in general lacks whenever it comes to anything 'new' or different'. See the 'updated' Ship Point proposal as proof positive of that assertion.

By now you must surely realize that if a new home/building for the maritime museum doesn't mesh with our "historic" harbour and its sacrosanct and (apparently) one-of-a-kind-on-the-entire planet "view", and moreover if it isn't deliberately designed to look like some silly, god awful rip-off of a 19th century English castle replete with peaks, gables and turrets, that it will never, ever be permitted to see the light of day. Oh and of course the most critical caveat of all - two stories maximum. Preferably less. Naturally.....

PS - I actually like your idea very much but for the reasons cited above, and more, that will never happen. If Ship Point and its proposed revival doesn't just SCREAM out as an obvious location for a new Maritime Museum I don't know what does. Instead we get...wait for it...ta-da!!!...."green space". Feck. Me.

You forgot to mention that in order to get past this Council any proposal needs to have an affordable housing component, even non-residential projects; perhaps especially non-residential projects.

Citizens gathered in Victoria pubs last week to offer proposals for 28 Bastion Square, the provincially owned building that most recently contained the Maritime Museum of B.C.

The community feedback sessions were organized by the Downtown Victoria Business Association to get suggestions for the empty building.

Kerri Milton, executive director of the Downtown Victoria Business Association, said so large was the turnout the meeting shifted from the Irish Times pub to the larger Bard and Banker.

Milton said at this point it’s impossible to say if there is any consensus on what to do with the building. Opinions have been gathered and will be part of a report.

I think a community use for the building would be bang on. Maybe have a restaurant/take out on the main floor as well.

How about....A courthouse museum?

And the gift shop could sell build-it-yourself scale model gallows kits and corpse dolls!

Maybe it could be converted to a strip club called "Legal Briefs".
