The margins on trinkets made overseas is a lot higher than those on books. As well, brick and mortar book sales have been declining with people buying more through (often cheaper) online delivery along with ebooks, forcing storefronts to diversify.

I went thru the main floor of Chapters on Tuesday and had a hard time finding the books.
Have you checked Bolen's lately? I have no issue with a merchant diversify their offering to meet market demand. Bolen's in particular does such a great job in merchandising that I often go there just to look at the displays!

Tony's Old time Photos is for sale, might close at end of October or November if no sale.

Indigo still has a bit of term left on their lease (expires 2016, cant recall exact month). Loblaws has signed a lease (for SDM) with the owner of 1212 Douglas (Chapters Building). Timing of relocation from 1222 Douglas to 1212 Douglas could be prior to this date if Indigo agrees to have their Lease bought out and SDM wants to make the move earlier than mid to late 2016. 1222 Douglas is slated for a re-development play which will also see 1280 Douglas ('old bank') somehow incorporated as both 1222 & 1280 are now both held under the same ownership group. No concrete plans for this re-development have been shored up (as far as I know). Hope this helps.
Thanks for that Brick and Mortar! This whole time I thought Chapter was shutting down and Shoppers was going to move into their location and then the Shoppers was going to be vacant.

Do you have new or additional information not related to that link (which seems to be a year old)?

Yes, friends went in recently and were told of the end-of-October or end-of-November closing.

The owners are planning to return with a new store but they are tight-lipped about future plans.
A sale is on now and all inventory must be liquidated.

Levi's definitely isn't an "in" brand these days. Hopefully the new store is an upgrade!

Ah, but now they have a stadium!
Levi's Stadium is a football stadium in Santa Clara, California which serves as the current home of the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League.... Levi's Stadium opened on July 17, 2014.

I don't think the kids these days really go for Levi's. It's more like Guess, American Eagle, Hollister, etc.
My parents on the other hand, they love them some Levi's! Problem is they don't go through 4 pairs of jeans a year.

The Levi's store always seemed pretty dead to me. I'm constantly surprised it has lasted.

The owners have another line of clothing, they may have been happy to having the store break even for a bit. I've never been in.

I think what did them in was stiff competition from The Bay. They have a large Levi's section and are often priced below the Levi's Store.

^ Sounds like you're a denim shirt away from the Canadian tuxedo there Mike.
Now that I think of it, I'm actually surprised there isn't a jean specific store around, selling a large variety of makes and models (more than the few options that stores like Street Jeanswear have).

Some work appears to be happening in an empty space between Field's Shoes and Sitka on Yates. Not sure if that means someone has leased the space or not.

When I was a teenager I owned Lee jean jackets and they were far more cool than Levis jean jackets
I bet you were the sharpest looking guy on the stagecoach.

A business named Eclipse will be moving into the vacant space in 601 Herald, at Government. Perhaps it's Eclipse Creative.
