Good point, but it may get some additional use depending on what happens with the public space.

Oh I am sure it will. I bet the the designs for the public space are only a few more consultations, half a dozen charettes and a handful of surveys away from being finalized.

I think it's demolished within 3 months.

The latest 1/4ly report says project completion by March 31, 2018.  The project includes the removal of the old bridge.

Does it mention when vehicles will be allowed to cross?

Revised contract with PCL says the bridge must be open to traffic by December 31, 2017.

With 357 days to go, what could possibly go wrong?

In the letter, Seaspan says they have "serious concern" with the new 3.5 knot limit because their tug boat captains need to use varying speeds to keep a loaded barge under control.

I'm not a tug-boat captain, but I'm unsure of this.  I think if the wind grabs your load you might have to reign it in with higher counter-speeds, but if water is pretty calm, do you have to use all kinds of speeds?

EDIT:  Oh, I get it, the tug has to go over 3.5 knots, that makes sense, scoot around and get a bead on the barge as needed.  But presumably the barge itself never needs to exceed that.

You got that right...the part where you say you are not a tug boat captain. .

A tug would never detach from the tow and "scoot around"

He can take it after 40000 posts no hurt feeling now..........if he was still in the 20000 slot his feeling may have been hurt back then

I find it odd that VHF hasn't been a tugboat captain at some point.

...in this photo, while one tug seems to be doing nothing useful to the operation...

One is assisting that is not attached to the barge.  In my scenario, this tug should be allowed to go more than 3.5 knots.

Well that photo really shows nothing would need the big picture to get the context of what is going on there

The second, rear tug is ready to scoot at a moment's notice.  Not tied to anything.

HB, if you say that a tug need not go over 3.5 knots, why did the tug company write to Victoria complaining?  It can't be the extra 43 seconds it will take to get through the gap now on a straight pull.
