Indeed ... I was just noting that there are already at least two bridge operators on the COV's payroll, and thus the $30,000.00 was likely money requested for training the existing COV bridge operators ... as opposed to hiring another one.

Presumably, there is quite a bit of technology in the new bridge that the operators will need to become proficient at.

Technology not only in the bridges operation, but also its safety checks and maintenance.

That's why they have plenty of windows in the operators shack. You look out and see if the bridge is up, and if so you press the DOWN button.

It's pretty straight forward, but in the olden days you needed to keep an eye out for runaway trains.

^Yeah pretty much two button operation, one labeled up, one labeled down, should do it. I will be SME and only charge the city $20k for the training.

You're probably not far off the truth!

But local government being local government, and engineers being engineers, I suspect there will be an "operations manual" at least 3" thick :)

Has absolutely nothing to do with the Johnson St. bridge but this is an example of what can be accomplished by some of these monster cranes and a well trained workforce....

No doubt the bridge operator was called in last night during the tsunami warning to pile sandbags around the lifting mechanism.

JSB Live Stream test...

Thought I might setup for a LIVE stream on YouTube for the big span install.  This is a test for quality - let me know how it looks, or if you can see it at all.   I could take requests for what you'd like to see.   :muching_out:

EDIT: I've ended the test.

Looks fine through FireFox at work.

Probably just my IT police, but my IE 11 will not play HTML5 video at work.

Course I wont be here on the weekend...

I've cropped and scaled the camera output to 720p and am uploading at 5Mbps.  The Sony camera does not output a clean HDMI feed so you have camera settings in a black area around the video, and you can't disable it.  The video itself appears to be 720p within a 1080p output so I'm cropping it using OBS, which I'm also using as my encoder to YouTube.

I'm looking at the span right now, zoomed in.  The wiring for the lights is attached on the outside of the span's frame.  I'm a bit surprised at this as the lighting seems like an add-on.

According to several sources Victoria Harbour could see a water level rise of 2.5 metres, or just over 8 feet, during a tsunami.

Presently the pier would be vulnerable, especially during a high tide as indicated by the line on the concrete.

How are they going to further enclose the pier to protect the lifting machinery once the bridge installation is complete?

In case you missed the stream test, it turns out YouTube automatically records live streams for later playback.  You can get an idea of what to expect on installation day.  As it was just a test, I'll be deleting this video in a few days.

Okay, I'm actually live now, and will be off and on as any interesting prep work is done.

Currently, they appear to be attaching falsework supports at the ring-leaf span joints.

EDIT January 25th: This is the archived stream in which they're clamping falsework supports to the primary ring-to-span joints.  The east end of the leaf span will rest on these supports during the process of bolting the span to the rings.

It would be nice to see what it looks like from the side.

What will that false work rest on?

I don't think it's going to rest on anything.  They're clamping it to the ring.  The falsework will provide a support for the east end of the leaf span.

Span Lighting...

Well, there's certainly lots of lighting - but it's clearly not hidden, especially the wiring, it's just attached to the span's outside frame.  Unfortunately, it looks pretty "after-market", vs. something that was designed in from the beginning - even though it was designed in from the beginning.

Ugh. It looks like some sort of BC Ferries retrofit ca. 1985. Not good for $120 million.  :whyme:

Sheesh. I expect my high end mountain bike to have internal cable routing.... Where was the creative direction here? It's $120 million!!!! Couldn't the architect spared a few moments to review this? Couldn't they have afforded and extra few thousand to weld in some internal wire conduit? The good news is all these bolt on plates will make the other bolt on plates stand out less.
