Testing continues...

The bridge is being raised and lowered quite frequently with full gates and lighting, the whole shebang.  They're also tweaking the blue lighting, making it more subtle.  The side decks are nicely lit now and they've got these eight strong blue spotlights along the underside of the deck that look really cool when the deck is first raised as it momentarily bathes those at the west approach in blue light (see second pic).  The west approach decks are similarly lit but I haven't seen them test these lights yet (only when they were initially installed).  Shot with my APC sensored Sony R1.

^ Multiple HD cameras, a drone, looks like I'm off the hook for live coverage - yeah!

We'd still like your perspective!  And if it's as windy as today, I'm guessing the drone is grounded.

The more I think about it, a live stream from my perspective will probably get boring after 10 minutes.  It's a pretty static event - no bridge going up and down or bungee jumping off a raised bridge etc.

I think I'll mainly be posting stills, you know, to judge crowd size - will it beat Trump's inauguration?

More seriously, what I think will be historic to live stream is the first gate raise to vehicles crossing the bridge for the first time - if it's not too dark.

The Finishing Touches...

The rings and trusses were being painted as I shot, so too were the traffic lanes.  The rings look so much better now.  It also appears that the west approach asphalt is going to be repaved.  This is kinda getting exciting.

Couldn't you just set up a tripod and just leave it to live stream?

I'm seeing random people on bikes crossing on the MUP on the webcam after hours - is this unofficially open now?

Walked by on my way home from work about an hour ago, they have it slightly raised. Wonder if it's to keep people off?

Also, the lighting is definitely toned down, or some of it wasn't on. Looks really smart with all the white LEDs shining from under all the handrails/railings.

There was a skateboarder on it last night just before 6PM. The gate at Store street was open. There were several cars still parked there and at least one person in the control room. The boarder dallied across the bridge deck, went all the way over the overpass to discover the fence, back across the MUP to discover the fence in front of the Janion.

Boy...a little paint on the structure and a little paint on the road sure does go a long way to making this thing look sharp.

When I look at Gary's shots, I realize what a huge arc it will be coming off the bridge from Vic West and going down Johnson Street. It makes it even more absurd that the City didn't actually push a new name and has stuck with the Johnson Street Bridge.

Don't be so sure.

For those law-and-order types I'll just note that operation of a drone anywhere near the bridge is illegal. ;)

What road is the bridge/ approaches actually on? Johnson, Pandora, or Esquimalt?

Roll.Focus has an exemption for the use this Saturday.

Well, all of the above.

Jo-pan'Esq Bridge. Should appeal to some.

This is correct for recreational drone operators, but is not necessarily true for commercial drone operators.

The legal distinction between recreational and commercial drone operators is substantial.

Commercial drone operators can apply for a permit to operate anywhere in Canada that the resultant permit allows them to operate.

Recreational drone operators cannot apply for such commercial permits, and are restricted to pre-determined operating areas throughout Canada.
