Saw it last night lit up, up close. Looked gorgeous and not too bright.

Is that lighting fish safe?

You'd have to ask the fish.

A Siamese lighting fish is never safe. They're aggressive little things.

Looks beautiful...

They were doing full speed test raises this evening.  This thing goes up and down fast.

It looks so much better with the addition of the white lighting to offset the blue. And Gary, I heard on a news report that the E&N trail connection will open at the same time as the new bridge.

Somebody on Facebook says that a media report says March 30th will be the last day for the old bridge. Maybe that’s just fur cars.

Anybody have any info?

Fur Cars are playing at the Tinto Rocks Festival; opening for the Meret Oppenheimers (I am sure somebody will get the reference).

CTV News reported last night on the TV that the new bridge will open for cars at 7PM on the 31st and that will be the time they close the old bridge forever.

https://vancouverisl...g-day-1.3852888

However, the text of the article says this:

Huggett said the old Johnson Street Bridge will close to traffic for good at 7 p.m. Friday, March 30 before the new bridge is opened Saturday.

The event will be held from noon to 5 p.m. and attendees will be able to be among the first to cross the brand-new bridge before it opens to traffic.

How can you close the old bridge to traffic for good the night before and have a party from noon to 5PM the next day and "be among the first to cross the brand-new bridge before it opens to traffic"?

So only Mike K. would be affected?

I think the "traffic" likely refers to car traffic. I bet pedestrian traffic can cross Saturday, at least until the new one opens.

Just a quick 720p hand held video of another full speed evening test lift.  They're right at the 90 second spec and watching them both go up and down together, the new bridge is noticeably faster.  I'm going to have to set up a proper shoot session to get the quality I want.

That’s odd.... I once timed the original bridge at 45 seconds.

I'm sure the City said earlier the new bridge would be slower.

Maybe they ran the old bridge slower, you know, to allow the new bridge to win - just in case someone was filming it.   ;)

All kinds of different information persists...

Now from CHEK:

To prepare for the traffic change over to the new bridge and to hold the opening event on March 31, both bridges will be closed to vehicles from 7 a.m. Friday, March 30 until 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.

Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to access the pedestrian walkway on the old bridge until 9 p.m. on March 31. Cyclists must dismount and walk their bikes across.

The new bridge and its walkway will be open for pedestrians from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. during the celebration event. The event will include a community picnic on both bridges, music and entertainment, food trucks, vintage cars and emergency vehicles, activity stations to share memories of “Old Blue” and crafts for kids.

During the closure of both bridges to vehicle traffic, drivers can use the Bay Street Bridge. There will be information boards on the east and west sides of the bridge to let drivers know about the closures and delays. BC Transit will be rerouted, and Wharf and Store streets will be open to vehicles.

The new bridge will open to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians at 9 p.m. on Saturday. The old bridge will then close.

Ah, that explains my confusion.  They're closing both bridges on the 30th to vehicular traffic.  This also implies the old bridge will close to vehicular traffic forever at 7 AM on Friday the 30th.  It also sounds like the entire bridge and approaches will be used for the festivities so you'll be able to walk, stand, run, jump, on the vehicle section of the bridge - until 5 PM.

I'm planning on live streaming the day's events, probably starting around 11 AM and continuing sometime past 9 PM to catch the first vehicles crossing the bridge.

Watch this space for the link...

I think that most people would vote to forget the party and not have both bridges closed for two days.

Don't be a party pooper spanky. We've all waited this long for the bridge. Let's take a bit of time to celebrate, and to take leave of the old bridge. C'mon down and get some treats.
