I thought they were leaving the old abutments to protect the new pier, instead of going so that they are down (to or no, do ?) elevation.

Perhaps they meant do-do.

Yep that is what Huggett said a few weeks back. But then again, that was a few weeks back.

A taste of what's to come.  Here's a couple of 4K daylight test clips.  Best enjoyed with a 4K TV or monitor.  Barring that, head over to London Drugs and view my YouTube channel on any of their 4K TVs.

YouTube does a pretty good job down-sampling so 1080p will look great as well - you'll just loose a lot of the fine details.

East Approach Deck Removal...

Just like they did on the west approach they've been busily cutting and removing the concrete surface of the east approach span.  The east approach span is the long steel span behind the Amy Usen in the pic below.

Watch some concrete cutting and slab removal - all in 4K goodness.  You'll notice a lot of heat shimmer at the 600mm full zoom (the waviness in the video caused by differences in air temp) because of the distance to the primary subject (about 600m).

So, a bit of an observation. I've been in the habit of checking in to the JSB webcam to watch the progress of work. When I watch for a few minutes, I notice that there are far more bicycles on the Esquimalt Road bike path over the bridge, than on the multi-use pathway/Galloping Goose connector.

I ride this everyday and notice that too. The trail is very slow and without any separation, a disaster waiting to happen at rush hour. There is a reason that Dutch design guides basically say "don't mix people biking and walking"

I'd also point out that the use of the on-street bike lanes validates the GVCC's position that both the trail and the on-street lanes were needed and would serve different audiences...

I prefer the road lanes across the bridge, but I'm a regular bike commuter. Riding a road bike with no separation between people feels worrying. New cyclists and people out for a slow ride may prefer the mixed path.

So millions of dollars on studies, surveys, modifications and delays have been a waste as far as the new bridge goes?

The separation will happen once the other side of the bridge is opened to pedestrians. Right now all non-vehicular users cross on the north side.

Yes should have been over 90% for bikes and pedestrians with a one lane alternating lane for cars on weekdays only.

No, but the bridge is a product of its time (2008/2009). Planning at the time didn't really talk about protected bike lanes or separated multi-use trails.

Super low-light capabilities...

Shot this at 10:13 PM, it was completely dark except for the lights in the scene.  Settings were 500mm, 1/30, F5.6, ISO 1250.  It's even cleaner/sharper on the flickr page.  The 4K video test clip was shot earlier at dusk.
