100%, including immigration law at the US border

Yanks aren't enforcing their laws 100%, and neither is Saanich or Victoria enforcing their laws 100% ... presumably with "humanitarianism" as the rationale behind such thinking.

This tends to show that people see the world somewhat differently from each other.

It also shows that if you seek broad based "humanitarianism" from me, without any critical thinking put behind it ... you're looking in the wrong place. In short, it's a given that I wouldn't make a great "humanitarian" mayor.

I see a mother/father and their child/children as inseparable, and my informed opinion reflects that belief.

On the other hand, I see a miscreant layabout sitting in a tent on public property, and doing so illegally for weeks on end, as the criminal activity and slap in the face to decent, taxpaying folks that it is.

My informed opinion reflects my belief that said miscreants should be forcefully removed from parkland bought and paid for with my tax dollars, and I really don't care how that removal is handled.

I'm not advocating for the billy-club and fire hose removal ... but I really couldn't care any less than I do if exactly that method wound up as the one used to remove these criminals from public parkland.

Anyway ... back to the Johnson St. Bridge.

When are they opening the pedestrian walkway on the south side?

As to when, you'll have to watch the progress from my photos and judge for yourself.   :D

I don't understand the anxiety for the pedestrian walkway on the south side of the bridge. Why not save some money and leave it off.

There is already a pedestrian walkway over Esquimalt Road, so what more do we need.

...Why not save some money and leave it off....

How would not completing it when it is 90% constructed save any appreciable money?

Perhaps I'm just in a good mood today ... but the area on and around the new bridge, with view corridors to the Parliament Buildings is a pretty stunning place to eat a hot dog (or just walk about grabbing a bit of the harbour breeze on a hot day).

Personally, I'd feel ripped off if the pedestrian amenities that have been long promised didn't manifest themselves for residents and tourists alike to use.

If you've traveled about the world at all, you quickly realize what we've actually got here on the South Island ... and the Inner Harbour (for better or worse) tends to be the focal point of visitors to our little town.

The pedestrian walkway is already there, attached to the bridge. It just needs the finishing touches on the approaches on both sides I believe. Talk about a nice view, the walkway will be a killer. I believe it will become extremely popular, and will also free up more space on the mixed use pathway on the other side. I hope it is opened soon. It'll be the piece de résistance.

The south side pedestrian walkway is essential for efficient passage from Vic West to anywhere south of Johnson St.  The two to three lights needed to get there from the north side of the bridge are the slowest, worst timed, lights I've ever seen.

However, if you are going anywhere south of Johnson and east of Market Square then there is a one light shortcut!

  1. At the end of Janion Plaza cross Store St. to the start of Pandora St. at Swan's (the only crazy long light you'll have to endure).
  2. Proceed up Pandora to the first crosswalk and cross to the south side.
  3. Jog slightly right and enter Market Square at the neon "Entrance" sign.
  4. Walk through Market Square to Johnson St.  If you desire to stay on the south side of east-west streets for shade, then use the crosswalk to go to the south side of Johnson St.

You are so right about the ridiculous light at Pandora and Wharf/Store. If you are coming down Pandora, for example, and you want to turn South on Wharf, if you just hit the red light, woe to you. It's an amazingly long wait. Traffic sits at the light, waiting, idling, building a line behind. Somehow the movement of car traffic through downtown has been missed. Are there not good solutions out there that avoid such a long holdup? Does the City do computer modelling?

And thanks for the pedestrian tip Gary.

Then hang a left on Pandora and jiggle over to Yates and then zip down to Wharf. It's cycling science.

West approach paving...

Now that they've added the new concrete island and southern berm shoulder to the west approach it's time for paving.  I suspect this will also eliminate the bump in the west bound bike lane.  Note there is an access ramp in the shoulder for cyclists coming from the E&N to join the east bound bike lane over the bridge ("asphalt bike connection" in the diagram below).

I wish the city would put more effort into getting the south side pedestrian crossing completed, at least while there is still some summer left.

It's as complete as "triangle island" is on the east side.   :D

And speaking of the east side, it appears they're digging a path down to the pedestrian walkway...
