NHL player John “Johnny Hockey” Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew Gaudreau were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes in Salem County, New Jersey, police said.

John Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29, were riding their bikes north on County Route 551 in Oldmans Township on Thursday at 8:19 p.m. At the same time, Sean Higgins, 43, of Woodstown, New Jersey, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee north on County Route 551, according to investigators.

Higgins tried to pass two vehicles ahead of him and entered the southbound lanes, police said. An SUV in front of Higgins moved to the middle of the roadway, splitting the north and south lanes in order to safely pass the Gaudreau brothers as they rode their bikes on the right side of the road, according to investigators.

Higgins then tried to pass the SUV and struck the Gaudreau brothers, police said. Both brothers died from their injuries.

Investigators said Higgins was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and charged with two counts of death by auto and is currently lodged in the Salem County Correctional Facility.

Rogers Communications has acquired BCE’s 37.5% stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment for CA$4.7 billion ($3.48 billion based on current exchange rates). MLSE is the parent company of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, the NBA’s Toronto Raptors and MLS’ Toronto FC.

Rogers already owned 37.5% of MLSE, and it puts a total valuation on the entity of $9.3 billion. Rogers also owns the Toronto Blue Jays, who are worth $2.27 billion, according to Sportico. Larry Tanenbaum owns the remaining 25% stake in MLSE, which also includes the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts.

Rogers declined to comment, and BCE did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In 2012, competing telecom giants Rogers and BCE teamed up to purchase a majority of MLSE from the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan for CA$1.32 billion ($1.78 billion).

The Vancouver Canucks' president of hockey operations says he doesn't see a way forward for the current roster amid an ongoing rift between two of its top stars.

Jim Rutherford addressed a long-rumoured spat between centres J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson in an interview with The Globe and Mail published Tuesday.

"I felt like for a long time that there was a solution here because everybody has worked on it, including the parties involved," he said.

"But it only gets resolved for a short period of time and then it festers again and so it certainly appears like there's not a good solution that would keep this group together."

The story does not detail what the issue is between the two players, but Rutherford said the drama has impacted the entire Canucks squad.

Vancouver finished last season atop the Pacific Division before being eliminated from the playoffs by the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of a gritty second-round series.

Yeah there’s too much bad blood apparently. Have to trade one and maybe both. Pretty lousy timing given Hughes is at peak form, this is wasting that opportunity.

Two centres, rarely on the ice at the same time.

I wonder what the beef is?

Is that the rub?   Pettersson makes $3.6M per season more than Miller (and will until the end of the decade), and they have essentially the same stats (Miller slightly better) over the past 3 or 4 years?

Pettersson:    $11.6M per season

Miller:  $8M per season

Not really. Petterson is a far better overall player. He plays a very strong 2 way game. JT though, plays with his heart.
JT is the type you win cups with, and he is known for being vocal about anyone he perceives as slacking. Petterson does not seem to have that next gear and that’s what the speculation is the beef is about: JT whines at Petey for not pushing harder and Petey thinks JT needs to play a better two way game and mind his own business.

But until that stuff came out from Rutherford today, there was no confirmation there even was a beef so it’s all educated conjecture.

Miller is a +63 career and Pettersson is +51.

Obviously it makes a difference about who you are sent on ice against regularly, the +/- is sometimes out of your hands.

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has acquired forward Filip Chytil, defenceman Victor Mancini, and a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft from the New York Rangers in exchange for forward J.T. Miller, defenceman Erik Brännström and the rights to defenceman Jackson Dorrington.

“On behalf of the entire Canucks organization I want to thank J.T. for his time here in Vancouver,” said Allvin. “J.T. was a passionate impact player and good leader for our hockey team. Moving him was not an easy decision but we are pleased with our return from the Rangers. Both Filip and Victor are good additions for our club and we are excited to see what they bring to us on the ice.”

Chytil, 25, has played 41 games for New York this season, registering 20 points (11-9-20) and 14 penalty minutes.
