Well, since the Royals have rivalled the old Cougars for WHL futility lately, hardly surprised that people who have gotten out of the habit of going to games haven't been inspired to return. At least they were competitive in last night's outing.

Pre-tournament play in the world junior hockey event was pushed back Saturday because of the COVID-19 surge.
Hockey Canada said it amended the schedule due to the "changing epidemiological situation" surrounding the omicron variant of COVID-19. The warm-up games were set to start Sunday, with Canada scheduled to play Switzerland in Red Deer. The tournament is set to start Sunday, Dec. 26.
While the updated schedule hasn't been finalized, the pre-tournament games won't start until Thursday. Hockey Canada also paused the sale of tickets for the pre-tournament games. Eleven games were scheduled as part of the pre-tournament schedule, with each team playing a minimum of two games.
The teams arrived in Canada this week. Players and staff were required to produce two negative tests before departing for Canada and have been tested every day since their arrival.

The Victoria Royals have joined the growing list of junior hockey teams being shut down for COVID-19 protocols with seven players on the list. The Royals ceased hockey-related team activities Wednesday night with the scheduled games Friday and Saturday in Prince George against the Cougars postponed as the result of “multiple players and staff” being added to the WHL COVID-19 protocol list due to exhibiting symptoms or having tested positive for COVID-19.

1820 at the game last night.
As I said, Victoria only supports winning teams! Having said that, I am sure that covid is impacting attendance given that the bulk of the crowds are usually the 60+

I note that the Royals are counting on a supportive local crowd as they raise prices again this year. Prices are up 50% over the past 6 years. Sides have gone from $20 to $30 (plus the ticket fee of course).
Will be interesting to see how entertainment options hold up during the recession.

The only thing to match the recent South Island rain drought has been the dearth of Victoria Royals goals. The Royals were shutout for the second consecutive game in losing 3-0 Wednesday night before 3,485 fans in Kelowna against the Rockets.
Victoria has scored only once in its past three games, including a 4-1 loss against the Vancouver Giants and 4-0 blanking at the hands of the Everett Silvertips. The other Victoria drought is in the win column as the Royals, the only team without a point in the Western Hockey League, tumbled to their fifth consecutive loss to begin the season.
Marcus Pacheco, on the power play, Caden Price and Adam Kydd scored for the Rockets. Jari Kykkanen made 20 saves for the clean sheet. Tyler Palmer made 26 saves in goal for Victoria.

Apparently the team also changed out most of the front office staff in the past year.
