What is the big empty field on the south side of Hillside just east Blanshard? Looks like a couple of View Towers could be built right there. Lots of other green space around.

They are "market rent". Developer gets free land and the council chooses the best offer. That's the end of government involvement.
Gotta be very careful with "free land," as the BC Community Charter forbids municipalities from parting with land for less than fair market value except in certain circumstances. Housing development is not one of those circumstances, so any aid given to a private developer could land the CoV in court.

It’s getting an extended care facility now. The replacement for Oak Bay Lodge.

One where the second one was to be, if the current crazy owner will give up the land. And one on the north side of View St. That’s 1,200 studio units right there. And they hide the existing building.

We should build a second and maybe even a third View Tower... they [will] hide the existing building.
Hide the CoV's ugliest building behind 1 or 2 equally ugly towers? I fail to see how that improves anything.

Anything with the massing and proportions of VT will be ugly. Implode VT and start all over.

Since that hasn't been empty for a while now I wondered if he was mixing it up with the SJ Willis school field on the North side of Hillside.

Oh please, a building of any shape can be made beautiful. View Towers is private property unless they can be bought out it’s not moving.
BC Housing could buy it and use some of that $90 million. Its probably worth $55 to 60 million

I don't understand how the value of that building could go up?
2017 valuation would reflect the renovations, right?

yup and we all know BC Assessment values are pathetically low, so I stick to my value of $55 to 60 million
anybody who offers BC Assessment value on my house will get a door in the face
