...Completion planned for spring 2025 for the Keating Flyover:..

I moved to Central Saanich in 1978 and there has been discussion about this at least since then. Unless it's the removal of a statue or the destruction of a museum things really move at a glacial pace in our region.

realignment of the southbound on-ramp to Victoria to make it safer for drivers getting onto the highway;

The only thing unsafe about it is clowns that don’t start speeding up to merge until they see the highway. I start speeding up at about the Coop grocery store on Keating.

How does that work considering there are two controlled intersections/lights between the COOP and the the 17A on-ramp? Unless you time them both perfectly - never happens for me, lol - really you can't start 'speeding up' until you get through the second light and at least a block or two through the residential area bordering Keating at that point, just before and above the downhill heading towards the ramp......

I think Watcher rides a bicycle, so it’s a a bit of a different acceleration window, and the lights line up.

I drive with one foot on each pedal. Gas, brake, and clutch. One hand on the shifter, the other on the radio tuner knob. So it’s difficult, but not impossible.

That's easy to do when you have 3 feet.

Pros don’t even have to use the clutch, and you don’t need brakes if you gear down.

Instead of spending this money on a Keating flyover, why not spend just a bit more and instead make a full interchange down the hill at Island View Road (which will be needed sooner or later anyway); then have Keating traffic exit the 17 there and go up over the hill to get to Keating - as one can already do.  The existing Keating access could remain as a one-way on-ramp to 17.

Because that would make all traffic (both directions, for both island view and keating roads) go past keating elementary, through the school zone at 30 km/h. Whereas now only keating/northbound traffic has to go past the elementary.

Can't we fix that part of the school zone to make it much more protected and pedestrian/bike friendly?

It’s a mess with drop off and pickup twice a day. Hemmed in by residential roads. Not sure how you could make it faster short of moving the school

Could you put a traffic light in that is more responsive to school traffic during drop off and pick-up times?

Or indeed maybe replace the school.

It does appear to be hedged in.

What was to be a simple flyover eliminating a dangerous left-hand turn across the Patricia Bay Highway onto Keating Cross Road has spiked in price by 73 per cent in 2½ years.

First announced in the fall of 2019, the flyover, which the provincial Transportation Ministry estimated would cost about $44.3 million, is now expected to cost $76.8 million.

On Friday, the province announced it would kick in $57.6 million for the project, with $16.7 million coming from the federal government and Central Saanich contributing $2.5 million.

I know it’s being called a simple flyover, but these designs are not simple. You’re building a rising, curved bridge that spans several hundred kilometres above an active four lane highway. It’s an involved project.

Hopefully they find a way to shorten the span

The plan mentioned improved cycling infrastructure along Keating, but will there be actual cycling infrastructure along the flyover? Would be great to be able to connect improved route on Keating to the Lochside Trail.

I have never seen a biker turning onto Keating from 17.
