Ricky Gervais has delivered another side-splitting activation for up-and-coming British vodka brand Dutch Barn by appearing on a giant out-of-home billboard in Slough town centre.

Returning to the bustling Berkshire borough where his iconic ‘The Office’ series was set, Gervais is promoting his challenger spirit brand by guaranteeing the public they can become rich and happy by consuming Dutch Barn. (The caveat being that that person is in fact Ricky Gervais).

Whether or not this is strictly true is another matter, but its makes for a fun spin on the sometimes dry world of out-of-home advertising nonetheless.

Ricky Gervais’ Dutch Barn vodka wins major retail listings

Ricky Gervais bought into Dutch Barn Orchard Vodka, made from apples in North Yorkshire, in November 2023, investing significantly in the spirit.

In December, he issued an ‘urgent appeal’ entreating “all supermarkets, off-licenses and corner shops” to stock the spirit.

“I’m the co-owner of the company. This could make me a lot of money,” Gervais quipped in a video posted on social media, where he describes the product as “the posh one in the brown bottle.”

Prior to Gervais’ involvement, the vodka was available to buy from Amazon, Waitrose, Tesco, Morrisons and ASDA, as well as via the Ellers Farm Distillery website.

Epic setup for a good joke there, but total crash and burn. Ouch.

Three Cascadia liquor stores are expected to be behind picket lines starting Saturday after talks between the union and the company broke down this week over wages.

A representative from Service Employees International Union Local 2, which represents 45 Cascadia employees at three stores — Quadra Village, Eagle Creek and Colwood — said the strike will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. at Eagle Creek and Quadra, with the Colwood store set to be behind picket lines after a rally at the Quadra Village location at noon.

“If Cascadia isn’t going to recognize the hard work we do to help make their business successful, we have no recourse other than to strike,” Alyssa Lansdowne-Allan, an employee from the Eagle Creek store said in a statement.

Workers, who make between $18 and $19 an hour, say they have been asking for a living wage for Victoria.

Currently the minimum wage in B.C. is $16.75 per hour, which will rise to $17.40 an hour on June 1.

Cascadia’s latest wage offer, which the union said was a base wage of $18.85 an hour for most workers, was turned down earlier this week.

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation has approved its Alcohol on Beaches re-pilot program on Monday evening, to allow people to drink alcoholic beverages legally at some local beaches.

People can consume alcohol at seven beaches — Jericho Beach, John Hendry Beach, Kitsilano Beach, Locarno Beach, New Brighton, Spanish Banks, and Stanley Park Second Beach. These are the same seven beaches in the initial program run in 2023.

Gives you an idea of how much cash it generates, hey? Possible the same person owns both but is only selling one. Either way, rent it for 15 years, take your money and move on and let someone else have a turn.

Holy cow, did you look at the listing? Big store, big volume. You’re just renting your turn at the money printing machine, this person just renewed a 5+5 year lease and is done. Good timing.

Or theft is way up and it's losing money.

Based on this photo, there is a lot of "singles" sales happening here:

Or your clerk was nearly murdered less than two months ago, and this business is frankly too dangerous for you:

A 16-year-old youth has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a Port Alberni liquor store employee was stabbed on Saturday, March 30, 2024.

Port Alberni RCMP attended Creekers Liquor Beer and Wine Store on Heath Road at Beaver Creek Road around 10 p.m. Saturday and discovered a woman had been stabbed and the suspect had fled. Several hours later, on March 31, officers located the suspect on the south side of the city.

The suspect, a 16-year-old male, has been charged with attempted murder and robbery, police said. His name has not been released because he is a minor.

Port Alberni and liquor not good together:

2022:

One person has suffered serious injuries and another is facing numerous court charges after a Port Alberni liquor store was robbed on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

When Port Alberni RCMP arrived at the King Edward Liquor Store in the 3600-block of Third Avenue they saw a staff member who had suffered “a severe laceration to their neck from the suspect,” RCMP Const. Richard Johns said.

The staff member was sent to hospital via ambulance and treated at West Coast General Hospital. Their injuries are non life-threatening, he added.

2023:

For the third time in as many years, a retired RCMP officer has won a Human Rights Tribunal complaint against a bar in Port Alberni that refused to serve him because he rolled a joint inside the establishment.

Robin Hayes was previously awarded $1,500 in 2021 and $2,500 in 2022, after filing HRT complaints against the Port Sports Pub(opens in a new tab) and the Blue Marlin Inn(opens in a new tab), respectively.

In the latest case, Hayes filed his complaint against the Creekers Pub, a bar located within the Ocean Marina Hotel.

In a decision issued Sept. 28(opens in a new tab), tribunal member Amber Prince awarded Hayes $10,000 as compensation for injury to his dignity, feelings and self-respect.

They're going a step further and allowing in corner stores. I think we started that, but was super restricted, store within store model only or something.

Customers of Devine Distillery will have one last chance to raise their glasses with the company's spirits as the multi-award-winning Saanichton business has announced it plans to close by the end of the year.

"It is with a heavy heart and many mixed emotions that we announce our intention to close," read the Instagram and website post.

"There was a number of factors that have led to this decision. Ultimately, we are a small family-owned and operated business and we've reached the point in time where closing operations is the decision that makes the most sense for our family moving forward."

Devine Distillery, which started in 2007, has made a name for itself with its spirits produced from local grapes, grain, fruit and honey. The distillery has no shortage of prestigious awards under its belt, including gold and category winners at the 2023 and 2024 World Whisky Awards, a gold with distinction award at the Canadian Artisan Spirits Competition in 2024, 2023, 2022 and 2021, and best in class and gold with distinction awards at the Canadian Artisan Spirits Competition.

Funny, during the pandemic, the sale of alcohol was deemed an essential service by the government and endorsed by the chief medical health officer. Who knew there could be negative consequences?
