The Victoria HarbourCats are very pleased to release the team’s schedule for the 2017 schedule.

The schedule includes 54 West Coast League regular season games with all 27 home games played at Royal Athletic Park. The HarbourCats will also play an additional three non-league home games at Royal Athletic Park.

The 2017 schedule can be viewed in its entirety on the HarbourCats website-- http://harbourcats.com/calendar/list/

The coming season will see the introduction of a new opponent with the Port Angeles Lefties joining the WCL.  Port Angeles represents a new geographic rival for Victoria, separated by only a ferry sailing across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The distance between the home plates -- 22.29 miles.

The HarbourCats open the season in Port Angeles on June 1 as they provide the opposition for the Lefties’ first ever game at Civic Field. It will be the only WCL game played that day.

Opening Night at Royal Athletic Park is scheduled for Monday, June 5 with the Wenatchee AppleSox in town to begin a three-game series.

The HarbourCats will play the Kitsap BlueJackets at 1:05pm on Fathers’ Day Sunday, June 18. It will be the first non-league game of the season with Kitsap, a former long-time member of the WCL, now in the Pacific International League.

School Spirit Day, which was immensely successful in 2016, returns on Monday, June 19 when the HarbourCats play a special 12:05 matinee against Port Angeles. School groups totalling more than 1,600 students attended the inaugural School Spirit Day in 2016.

The defending WCL Champion Corvallis Knights will be in Victoria on June 20-22. It will be the Knight’s first visit to Royal Athletic Park since 2014.

HarbourCats fans will again have the chance to celebrate the Canada Day Weekend at the ballpark with the Cowlitz Black Bears in town for a three-game series June 29-July 1.  Fireworks will again highlight ‘Canada Day Eve’ following the 6:35pm game on June 30 and will be followed up by a Canada Day matinee at 1:05pm on July 1.

Fireworks Nights are always a fan favourite and will return in 2017 with further dates to be determined.  HarbourCats fireworks displays rival the best pyrotechnic shows in Victoria with a spectacular 18-minute display set up in centerfield following the baseball game.

The Burnaby Bulldogs will play their first-ever games against the HarbourCats, with a two-game weekend series on July 15-16.  Game times will be 6:35pm and 1:05pm.

The all-star break will take place July 17-18. The Yakima Valley Pippins will host the 2017 WCL All-Star Game at Yakima County Stadium on July 18.

The HarbourCats’ Canadian cousins, the Kelowna Falcons are in Victoria on July 25-27 and the home schedule concludes with a series against the Bellingham Bells, 2016 playoff opponent of the HarbourCats, July 31-August 2.

The 2017 regular season concludes with a two-game series in Port Angeles on August 5-6.

The WCL playoffs, should the HarbourCats qualify, consist of two best-of-three series beginning August 8.

A full promotions schedule will be released closer to the 2017 season.

It might be Central North Park's biggest Christmas party ever held by a resident baseball team!!

Jim Swanson and Brad Norris-Jones's Victoria HarbourCats throw open the office doors for this next Thursday.

Everyone that I know that needs to get a Christmas Tree, the timing here is right, grab one from AnawimHouse across the street.

My guess is that they make it part way through the second season before they fold and that the City never sees a dime in actual cash as they will defer payment like they did with RG.

Ah, fun to look back here on the old posts.

I didn't think of that, but I was thinking that if they want to hit those attendance figures (1100+) they will need some half-decent marketing and merchandising. Think Royals level marketing. Baseball isn't exactly soaring in popularity these days, especially not in Canada.

And 4 years in, they lead the league in attendance.  And are #9 (out of 169 teams!) in North America for collegiate ball.

The HarbourCats are adding more club seats.  Outside of the arena lounge, I think it's the only place in town with food and drink "service to your seats".  You have a designated runner for food and drinks.

Calling it a “significant signing,” the Victoria HarbourCats inked the first international player in the franchise’s five-year history on Tuesday.

Outfielder and utility player Po-Hao Huang of Taiwan will join the West Coast League club for the 2017 season.

The five-foot-11 sophomore from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan played in North America in the summer of 2016, competing in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League for the Elmira Pilots. In 28 games, Huang hit .260 with a home run and 17 runs batted in. He also had five doubles and two triples.

It's happening again this year, due to the generosity of Bosley's on Yates.  It's the Victoria HarbourCats "Bark in the Park" Day-game.  Bring Fido or Rover to the game!

Victoria native Nick Pivetta may make the bigs tomorrow.  If he does, he becomes the first HarbourCat to play a regular-season MLB game.

In 2016, Forbes listed the IronPigs as the fourth-most valuable Minor League Baseball team with a value of $43 million.[2]

The IronPigs name is a reference to pig iron, used in the manufacturing of steel, for which the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania is world-renowned.

He was threw the first pitch in Victoria HarbourCats history in June of 2013, and he’s from Victoria. It seems only right that he’ll also be the first former Victoria HarbourCats player to put on a big-league uniform.

The HarbourCats are proud to announce that right-handed pitcher Nick Pivetta has become the first alum to reach Major League Baseball.

The 2013 HarbourCats hurler and Victoria native will be promoted to the major leagues by the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday and is expected to make his MLB debut on Wednesday night at Citizens Bank Park against the Miami Marlins.

Pivetta is in Philadelphia, the team has announced officially, and is listed as the probable starter for the Phillies -- assuming the weather does not impact Tuesday’s game, Pivetta will toe the rubber on Wednesday night.

For those who want to watch the game on Wednesday, the HarbourCats will have their office open and the game on TV, starting at 4pm PST (101-1814 Vancouver Street).

Pivetta attended Lambrick Park High School and played for the Victoria Eagles of the British Columbia Premier Baseball League. The Victoria product played for Canada’s Junior National Team, pitching in the 2010 18U World Championship.

Pivetta signed with the HarbourCats in 2013 while attending and playing New Mexico Junior College. He started two games during the HarbourCats inaugural season, posting a 2-0 record with a 5.26 ERA and nine strikeouts in 13.2 innings.

Just days after his second start in Victoria, Pivetta was selected in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals.

On July 28, 2015, the Nationals traded Pivetta to Philadelphia in exchange for all-star major league closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Pivetta was promoted to triple-A late in 2016 where he posted a 2-2 record with a 2.55 ERA in five starts for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.  He began 2017 in Lehigh Valley, posting a 3-0 record and 0.95 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 19 innings prior to his promotion to the Phillies.

Prior to the 2017 season, Pivetta represented his country, suiting up for Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic. Nick was the starting pitcher for Canada’s second game of the WBC, pitching four innings and allowing just one run on five hits with a strikeout in a 4-1 loss to Colombia.

"It's an absolute thrill to see a HarbourCats player reach the big leagues -- our first, and it's a significant milestone," said HarbourCats managing partner Jim Swanson.

"Most of all, we're happy for Nick and family and friends. That our first MLB player is also a product of the Victoria baseball system makes it a perfect situation and something we can all celebrate. We think Nick will have a long career as a big league pitcher, he's done all the right things to develop."

Pivetta will become the seventh Canadian-born player to appear in the major leagues in 2017 and 259th all time. He will join a fellow Victoria native and Lambrick Park grad, outfielder Michael Saunders, with the Phillies.

The Victoria product is one of 31 HarbourCats drafted in the franchise’s first four years in the West Coast League. As a league, the WCL recorded a high-water mark in 2016, with 93 current or former players taken in the MLB draft.

In 2016 alone, 28 WCL alumni played in the major leagues.

Pivetta was a guest at the HarbourCats Hotstove in November 2016, where he joined HarbourCats Head Coach and former major league outfielder Brian McRae, as well as former major league catcher and current Sportsnet baseball analyst Gregg Zaun.

The HarbourCats open the 2017 WCL season on June 1 on the road against the WCL’s newest team, the Port Angeles Lefties.  Their home opener at Royal Athletic Park is June 5 when the Wenatchee AppleSox visit Victoria.

Works out a bit better for any Victorians that want to go catch his debut. Much easier and cheaper to get away to Los Angeles for the weekend than to get to Philly for a weeknight.

Anyone in for a road trip?
