Ah, very good.

Yeah they'll have another release. It won't be as big as the first though. Now let's hope Blink-182, Major Lazer, Disclosure, Migos, Rae Sremmurd, Kaytranada, Lil Yachty, Matoma, Klingande, Skepta, Claptone, Le Youth, Tensnake, Blond:ish, and Lee Burridge don't back out.

^ I know this is a Fyre Fest reference but the current Blink 182 situation is a little raw right now

“What would B.C. be without the festivals that bring us together, the concerts that make us dance and the cultural events that connect us to our communities?”

That’s a question, organizers of Brewery and the Beast (BATB), one of Vancouver Island’s most popular food and beverage summer events posted on their Instagram on Wednesday (Feb. 19).

“These experiences aren’t just entertainment – they’re part of who we are,” reads the post.

17 Black Events, the company behind BATB, is standing in solidarity with 24 other B.C. events companies fighting for the survival of the entire arts and culture community.

I don’t know. If your festival can’t pay its own way, maybe it doesn’t deserve to exist.

If people dont what to pay for it they have voted with their wallets. it should be the only vote that counts.

Event groups across B.C. say the clock is ticking for the future of the industry after the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport said a $20-million pool would be placed on pause.

“It’s a real possibility that events will downsize,” said Scott Gurney, owner of 17 Black Events.

In 2021, the BC Fairs, Festivals, and Events Recovery Fund (BCFFE) was launched as a one-time recovery fund for events impacted by COVID-19. It’s been renewed every year since, and the province estimates that nearly $80 million has been granted to eligible events.

Last year, more than 1,100 events used money from the fund, which can provide up to 20 per cent of the total budget to event organizers.

Easy to see how you can become addicted to that money.  Let's say you run a festival with 5,000 guests averaging $50 each.   $250,000 income but you can add in another $150,000 in management fees - for a $400,000 budget - and get $80,000 of that paid directly by government.

Yep. That’s nothing compared to the skim that will come from the pool rebuild though.

The Highland Games, Beer Festival, BC Lions game in Victoria, Victoria Day Parade all got money for 2024.  Surely none of them were in danger of closing up.

As someone in that industry once said to me, "we are masters at grant applications." You run a few festivals a year, bank $50k+ per festival in government money, and it's not a bad gig.

Don't we think most or even all of these would have got by with nothing from this new fund?  the Highland Games - in it's161st year, probably has the momentum, no?  The Marathon?  The Pacific Cup that has been going on for 50 years?  Phillips Back Yard, Rifflandia, SkaFest, Fernfest, dragon boats, TC10k, TD Jazzfest, the annual pro gold tournament, the film festival.  All would have been fine, likely.

These events sell out in hours. Speaking of which, Culinaire is this week. See you there!

$104k for the Phillips backyarders.

I have to think a lot of the money ends up going to media for advertising.

At least it goes back into our economy. I wonder where the skim on the pool project will go?

I'm not even that worried about where the money goes.  I'm more concerned that long-running events and festivals that likely did not need the money, were still granted it.  I looked at the application details; there was no requirement to show need.

I was watching an episode of FBI Most Wanted, these two young foster kids were running away from their homes with the goal of getting to Canada, cause everything is free there.
