Camosun College has approved a $172-million budget for the next year, but is headed to mediation with its faculty association over layoffs and working conditions.
Camosun Faculty Association president Lynelle Yutani said initial talks with a mediator — assigned after negotiations with the college broke off — are set for early May.
She said the number of jobs lost as the administration dealt with an $11-million budget shortfall is likely equivalent to at least 40 full-time positions, adding the majority of those affected were sessional instructors who didn’t have continuing positions, and therefore no protection against layoffs.
There were about nine layoffs in November affecting permanent faculty members, said Yutani, adding the college is “trying to find a further 19.”
