So one in 100 delivered parcels will be off target and in a flower bed, or smashing through a window because a gust of wind came out of nowhere?

This is another dumb idea nobody asked for, that will fade away like the rest of the dumb ideas we’ve debated on here, that never went anywhere.

Less than 120 years ago they said that to Orville and Wilbur too.

Orville and Wilbur weren't trying to fly their plane onto people's front stoops.

Will drones use the enter phone at my building so I can buzz them into the lobby?

No, you need to leave a window open for it.

Over time we've been gradually increasing the likelihood that delivered items are going to be damaged one way or another, so I suppose this is an inevitable step in the progression.

This is the surveillance state’s wet dream. Just send a drone in with their toothpaste delivery, and scan the property, the neighbour’s property, etc.

We already know Amazon allows the government to access Ring door bell footage, so why not footage from one of their drones?

Police don’t even need a warrant, then can just have it: https://www.eff.org/...sent-or-warrant

The article never cited even one example of how a Ring video was misused. Despite tens of thousands of them being in the hands of law enforcement.

Seems to me like a solid safety action.

You know who doesn’t have dash cams in their private vehicles? Lawyers, and police.

Slippery creatures, for sure. Always avoiding the truth of video.

None of us want to be judged on our everyday public actions. But we might be better off if we are. Stuff done or said in private is still safe from scrutiny.

My thoughts on Ring are it’s like trusting the criminal with the security. Amazon is one of the main things I’m trying to monitor

Remember when it was feared everyone would have a drone and privacy would be lost and commercial aviation would be imperilled?

Turns out it’s a niche hobby no more popular than old school RC planes.

We will review this post in 10 years and again at 20 years.

The Internet still seemed like a good thing up until about 2010.

I guess it's time to brick up those windows. Light and fresh air are for who follow the rules.

A provincial decision to allow search-and-rescue teams to use drones is being embraced by a Vancouver Island group, which says the devices will have a huge impact on searchers’ ability to find people.

Ken Neden, of Arrowsmith Search & Rescue, said his Qualicum Beach-based group has already been training with two small drones. Members are impressed at how one of them can detect body heat to pinpoint a person’s location.

“It’s pretty amazing what it will pick out that can’t be seen with the human eye,” said Neden, one of the team’s search managers.

“Heat signatures” of people can be detected by drones under forest canopies and in bushes, he said.

Neden said the team has used a drone in a couple of searches, but it has not yet been part of a rescue.

So far, 18 of the team’s 60-or-so members have earned a basic drone licence, he said.

Why the heck would they have to be allowed to use drones, just go out and use them.
