Zipline's New Drone Brings Aerial Delivery Closer for Millions More of Us

The new aircraft are in testing and should go into service by early 2024.

I already foresee mayhem. Dropping a package onto a flower bed or onto a car or placing it in a precarious place the AI thinks is a sidewalk or driveway is going to be a real challenge, I think. If you think about it, packages are left in very precise places, to limit exposure to weather, to not be in the way, to be hidden from direct sight from a sidewalk if possible, etc.

The drones are so damn noisy, they shouldn't be used in this manner at all.

They should be restricted from any residential area, IMO.

I think it's just a different noise from street noise.  And in this example, the drone stays up high and nearly silent, it drops the delivery vessel.

I’m telling you, this is going to mess people’s property up. There’s a science to proper deliveries, and a 2D view of a drop site from up above lacks a lot of important context, and has the potential to cause damage when off even by inches. Throw some wind into the equation and the liability increases.

That thing looks like it can handle wind pretty well.

One might say roads for Amazon delivery trucks “mess up” our collective property.

Will drones use the enter phone at my building so I can buzz them into the lobby?

Package on a string is not good in wind.

In most wind it’s fine. The droid has mobility too. In up to 15 mph they tested it to hit a dart board sized target with 🎯 over 99% accuracy. The drone can still fly short one propeller and it has a parachute safety too.

So one in 100 delivered parcels will be off target and in a flower bed, or smashing through a window because a gust of wind came out of nowhere?

This is another dumb idea nobody asked for, that will fade away like the rest of the dumb ideas we’ve debated on here, that never went anywhere.

Amazon delivers 1 in 200 packages to the wrong house now. Then some are stolen. 15% are returned.

OK, if we're talking droids that's entirely different matter.

None of which drones solve. There’s even a higher likelihood packages will end up in the wrong places.
