By riding a bike.

That's not a foot race.

Shouldn’t the TC 10k have it’s own thread? Or does it?

How does one win a "virtual" foot race?

Treadmill data?

With participation of elite runners limited, 2022 TC 10K is wide open

The lingering effects of the pandemic have severely limited the number of participants from running hotbed nations such as Kenya and Ethiopia, who have dominated the front of the men’s pack in many previous editions of the Times Colonist 10K.

__________

The race begins at 8 a.m. in the Legislature precinct and heads north on Government to Wharf to east on Yates to south on Cook to east on Richardson and then south on Moss, east on May, south on Memorial, west on Dallas Road to Erie to Belleville before finishing back in front of the Legislature.

CHEK-TV will broadcast the race live from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Runners of all stripes take their mark this weekend as the Royal Victoria Marathon returns to area streets.

On Sunday (Oct. 9), more than 8,000 are registered for the marathon early start at 6:30 a.m., the 8 km that starts at 7:15 a.m., the marathon and half marathon main start at 8 a.m. and the Thrifty Foods Kids Run at 11 a.m.

Road closures along the routes will impact vehicle travel in Victoria and Oak Bay with roads reopening on a rolling schedule shortly after the last participant passes.

There has been no blueprint, since the Second World War, for the mass restart of sports and entertainment from an almost wholesale stop. Sport is now back in full swing with the first full Royal Victoria Marathon, not run since pre-pandemic in 2019, returning today to the streets of the B.C. capital. The 2020 event was cancelled and only the half marathon and 8K were conducted in 2021.

“It was a huge challenge. There was no road map to restarting because we’ve never had to before,” said general manager and race-director Cathy Noel.

The demand has been pent up and is ready to burst with participation up five percent from 2019. A total of 7,934 people have registered to run. That includes 1,561 for the marathon, 3,439 for the half-marathon, 2,354 for the 8K and 580 for the kids run.

“We’re not looking back to 2019. We’re looking to the future,” said Noel.

Teferi Kebede Balcha, an immigrant from Ethiopia, is getting used to the streets of his adopted hometown. The 41-year-old again shunted aside age to win the 2022 Royal Victoria Marathon on Sunday in two hours, 25 minutes, 26 seconds to follow up his victory in the Times Colonist 10K last spring.

With a heady personal best time of 2:07:38 in his prime, he has been around with career victories from Israel to Shanghai. Balcha is coached in the Prairie Inn Harriers Club by two-time Olympic marathoner Bruce Deacon, who has brought to the surface untapped reserves as Balcha enters his masters running days.

“He is a champion and works very hard,” said Deacon.

Balcha led all the way and won by a wide margin.

“It was very nice out there today,” said the full-time janitor, who trains after work.

“I was happy and surprised. Marathon running is already hard enough, and you need lots of stamina, so I loved getting the support of people cheering along the route.”

Actually it was down 7% but nobody ever fact checks anything so you can say whatever you want these days.

More than 8,500 people were at the 40th GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon, early Sunday morning in downtown Victoria

It costs over $150 to enter the marathon.

And no prize money this year.

Two-time Olympian Natasha Wodak, the Canadian women’s marathon record holder, went on to bigger things but she never forgot where it all started. That’s why she never misses a Pioneer 8K race hosted by her home-club Prairie Inn Harriers, the 44th edition of which goes today at 11:30 a.m. in North Saanich, with the start/finish line at the Tourist Information Centre just off the Pat Bay Highway.

Wodak is a seven-time women’s winner of the event and has also won the Royal Victoria Half-Marathon.

With almost two months before race weekend, both the marathon and half-marathon of the Royal Victoria Marathon have sold out, the earliest both distances have sold out in the event's 44-year history.

The race, which is on Oct. 12 and 13, now has an open wait-list for hopeful runners as people transfer to a different distance and spaces open for the race.

“When the marathon distance sold out in July, we thought the half would eventually sell out as well, but not this early” stated race director Cathy Noel in a news release. “Now we will look to sell out the eight-kilometre, five-kilometre and Thrifty Foods Kids Run, as well as fill all our [volunteer] positions.”

This weekend’s 44th Royal Victoria Marathon and its accompanying half marathon are sold out, and the field is filling up for the 8K, 5K and Thrifty Foods Kids Run, which are also part of the event.

With all those athletes taking part — more than 12,000 are expected — several streets will be temporarily closed around the legislature in James Bay and around Willows Park in Oak Bay on Saturday, Sunday or both.

Events begin Saturday in Willows Park with the 5K, starting at 9 a.m., and the Kids Run, starting at 10:30 a.m.

The lineup snaking down lower Douglas Street Friday morning to enter the Royal Victoria Marathon Expo in the Crystal Garden spoke volumes.

Running events may have taken a hit with pandemic cancellations in 2020 and 2021, but they’re back in a big way — registration for this weekend’s races was up more than 35 per cent from last year, with 12,315 participants signed up as of Friday.

It’s the third-highest total in the four-decade history of the Royal Victoria and the largest field of participants since the record 14,010 in 2010. Organizers expect the 2024 event to surpass, by Sunday, the current second-highest total of 12,492 from 2009.

Victoria’s not the only race destination to feel the resurgence. The Boston Marathon has announced tougher qualifying standards to get into the 2025 race in April, because of space restrictions on the historic narrow roads of the Massachusetts capital. The Royal Victoria Marathon has long been an official qualifier for Boston.
