I read this article today, and immediately thought someone is really dropping the ball here. We should be able to market this run worldwide, and get a LOT more international participants. Especially in the shoulder season for hotels.

I'm not sure why you would cap the entries either. Make two start times for the 1/2-ers.

http://communities.c...e-deadline.aspx

Want to run in the RVM's 30th anniversary half marathon?

You're out of luck. It's a sell-out one month before the air horn blast at the starting line.

So if you're like many people around Victoria who wait for the last minute to buy tickets or sign up for an event, you'll be watching on Oct. 11 from the sidelines.

Unless of course you want to run the full marathon (and baby, you'd better up your training) or scale down to the 8K race. Or you could accompany your kid on the 1.2K kids run.

This is the first year the Royal Victoria Marathon capped entries for all four races to make them manageable.

The half-marathon entries hit the 5,400-registrations cap this morning. Last year, a total of 4,899 registered by race day.

As of 11 a.m. today, 2,308 people were registered for the marathon, 250 for the early start marathon (combined limit is 4,000), 1,377 for the 8K (2,500 limit) and 246 for the Thriftys Food Kids run (1,000 limit).

Overall, total registrations are up 56 per cent compared to this time last year.

Race general manger Cathy Noel earlier speculated about interest in this year's races, some of it due to this being the 30th anniversary for the event known for its picturesque course. Let's face it, for out-of-towners, this is a beauty of a destination race.

Lots of runners come from the U.S. but so far, there are people wiinging their way here from more than a dozen countries including:

(Registrants by country)
Australia 2
Belgium 2
Costa Rica 2
Denmark 2
England 4

Germany 2
Ireland 1
Japan 4
Mexico 4
New Zealand 1

Marathoners had signed up by press time for the 30th Royal Victoria Marathon.

579

Children had signed up for this year's 1.2-km kids fun run.

So there will be a little over 10,000 people participating in all the races next week.

Hmmmm...

So they did the Run for the Cure today, 4000 runners raised $500,000 ($125/each runner) and they raised almost $30M nationally, a little bit more than last year.

Last month they did the Terry Fox run, with 650 runners raising $14,000 (a little over $20 per runner). The Terry Fox run has raised about $40M since 1980.

Shows you how much more you can pull off when you get a major corporate sponsor, eh?

You think that with all these people running we would have found a cure for something by now wouldn't you?

Maybe too much administration and not enough researching.
Life's a journey......so roll down the window and enjoy the breeze.

I think the "race cap" concept is a marketing ploy to try and get more people to register in advance for the other events rather than just wait for race day.

Last year more than 12,000 people raced in the various events which leaves them down about 20% thus far.

I've run the marathon, the half, and the 8k at this event. It's really, really crowded in downtown and Beacon Hill Park and doesn't really open up until the pack starts to spread out at Clover Point. They'd have to change the course to put many more people on it.

Events like the Run for the Cure aren't about efficiently getting people from point to point, competition, or personal records: the community feel actually seems to benefit from the packed-in course. If people want to open up and move, though, there has to be some room to do it.

The 10K is contemplating course changes to eliminate a hairpin turn at Dallas & St Charles; there are too many people for just one lane in each direction now.

I don't know RVM's finances so can't run a cost/benefit analysis against extra registrations vs. extra policing costs, course changes, portaloos, keeping the course open longer, more volunteers, etc., etc - but I expect the race committee has done just that and made this decision.

Although some people like monster races (Chicago, New York, Boston), others don't. RVM is known as a quality race that's a good medium size. Runners' World calls it one of the best destination marathons in the world. Why does it have to be more than that?

Incidentally, I'm doing my bit to spike the tourist economy benefits of the race: I'm hosting 14 out-of-town runners at my home for Thanksgiving Dinner the afternoon of race day. :)

So the 8k is sold out now, and total registration is over 11,600.

I think my math was off. And the TC article today said total last year was 10,XXX.

Canadian Running ran an article in June as saying more than 12,000 people ran the event last year.

Who knows, I wasn't there to count!

Sounds like we'll have the RCMP helicopter up over the marathon all day. :whyme:

(TC link) "The gender breakdown this year is 59 per cent female and 41 per cent male."

Is this a trend, or what? (no complaints here)

jbw

ps. Yeah, our tax dollars at work (helicopter fuel costs are not cheap).

editted to add: And, if the objective were to create a 'presence' (of Big Brother in the sky watching over would be terrorists), might not simply playing a CD of helicopter roaming on the loudspeaker system amply suffice? and save $10,000+ in fuel costs)

I dont really think that gender matters when it comes to people in any given marathon.
I think most men who are in the marathon are not in it for looking and gauking at the female competitors.
I guess you are not in the marathon due to the fact it would be difficult to run with a trench coat on

I think there are a growing number of women participating because they're newly seeing it as a way to become self-actualized, and marathon participation gives them something to aim for while exercising (all of which are usefully slimming so they look better for men, and feel better about themselves because they look better for men).

Men's reasons for running are quite different, very long established and slanted simplistically towards general health improvement and competitiveness (if not vs others, then improving on their 'personal best').

As a female athlete, a veteran of Royal Vic, the Boston Marathon and the Triathlon World Championships, I cannot articulate effectively what a steaming pile of unmitigated horse**** this statement is.

"Men do it for Good Reasons; Teh Wimmins do it to get themselves a man."

Climb back under your rock.

As a female athlete,.

Well, my remarks were about the "growing number of women participating", and not meant to apply to the die-hard elite such as yourself, a multi-marathoner athelete who travels the world to participate in such events and so, is in a class by herself.

Anyway.... I went and watched the finish, they guy was sure still cruising 2:13 and 42km later.

He blew away the course record ($5000 bonus), came in under 2:14 (another $5k bonus) plus he got $3k for the win. $13,000 race-day!
