So not only are we getting daily cancellation notices as top stories, we’re now getting notices of future meetings to discuss cancellations.

Obviously the fair is done for the year.

The fall fair on Salt Spring decided this week to cancel it's 124th annual event as well.  Sad.

I've been to the fall fair on Salt Spring once, remember it was pretty lively. Will the Saturday market be axed as well if it hasn't already? I've enjoyed numerous trips to that, but it is the definition of crowded.

Of course it is cancelled, Dr. Henry stated as such when she cancelled the PNE.

i've been waiting to hear the announcement that it's cancelled.. realistically it cannot happen this year, even a down key version of it with no midway, no musical events and just animals...it brings too much of a draw.. too many people too close together no way to sanitize

we certainly should be studying the Edmonton bonspiel and the Vancouver dental expo to see how transmission happened. From Edmonton;

In fact, the Alberta government believes it wasn’t the bonspiel itself that caused the outbreak. Rather, it was a banquet. “We suspect the virus was spread at a buffet where serving spoons were handled by many people,” Hinshaw told reporters.

Saturday market hasn’t announced anything yet, but I expect it’ll go ahead in a limited fashion later in the spring or summer. The society that runs the Tuesday market has been operating for a couple or few weeks now.

Sounds like there will be a fair this year, with limited events and a different take on the annual event altogether.

They’ll be hosting social media-based activity and at the site of the fair there will be a farmer’s market and some social distancing events that they have yet to clarify.

An announcement on the Saanich Fair is expected in April.

“Stay tuned,” said Dave Hamer, president of the North and South Saanich Agricultural Society, which normally holds the event over three days at the beginning of September. It typically sees about 50,000 people pass through its gates.

Planning is underway for the 2021 Saanich Fair, with organizers set to hold the annual event on the Labour Day weekend.

“It may be a different Fair experience this year, but rest assured, there will be a 2021 Saanich Fair,” the North and South Saanich Agricultural Society said in a statement.

The Saanich Fair, hosted by the North and South Saanich Agricultural Society, is set to return to the Saanich Fairgrounds over the Labour Day weekend — Sept. 4 to 6. — with the theme of honouring essential workers.

While the midway, animals and art displays will be there as usual, the fair had only one-fifth of its usual budget to book acts for the main stage, said spokeswoman Kelly Kurta. “That’s a huge drop for us,” said Kurta, who explained that the fair typically runs on revenue from the previous year, but it was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. “Our main stage is where you see that reflected.”

This year’s fair will feature more local performers and additional multicultural components, including more Indigenous content.

Planning for the fair, which usually begins the day after the last fair, only started in earnest two months ago, she said.

“It’s been a lot of hurry up and wait,” said Kurta, adding while many of the components are in place, organizers are still short between 50 and 100 volunteers.

thank god the fair is over for another year.

Fair kept Central Saanich police busy with assaults, death

Among them was a call for a man in medical distress who later died. The B.C. Coroner’s service is investigating the death.

Police are also investigating two “isolated” assaults at the fair’s midway. On Sunday, a 17 year-old male was assaulted by an unknown male on the carpet-slide ride. On Monday, a male in his late thirties was assaulted by another male at the midway.

Five impaired drivers were also taken off the roads, and a dog owner got away with a warning after the canine showed signs of overheating in a vehicle.

There was also a report of a missing child. Saanich Fair organizers alerted police on site after closing the gates until the child was found and returned to family members.

You wanna see a horror movie? Go check out UVic.

The media’s fuss over those thousand kids is comedic in light of what some 20 thousands kids lined up at the SUB looks like.

Why is a 17 year-old on a carpet-slide ride?

UVIC enforcing the vaccine card mandate starting next week? I can tell by looking at photos how well they are enforcing the mask mandate.

Imagine if the passport is actually a clandestine way to ensure the hoards of post secondary students get vaccinated. Thousands upon thousands of kids mixing between classes, food courts, lounges, libraries, bars, pubs and bedrooms from now until April.

A friend working at UVic says the situation on campus is “crazy.”
