Ban drive thrus? Some local politicians think it’s an idea worth exploring to help the environment

We’ve all used them at one time or another.

“When you have a sleeping baby in the car and you want to pick up dinner for your family there is an allure of stopping at a drive-thru,” said Saanich Councillor and CRD Chair Colin Plant.

Two year old news ...  it went absolutely nowhere ... and the only person commenting who thought it was a "great" idea was Lisa Helps - which was my point.

Having Saanich Council apparently "discourage" drive throughs means absolutely nothing ... Council also "discourages" lots of other things lacking any by-law to back it up ... which essentially means they're talking through their hat.

Saanich welcomes cars and drivers, with parking a-plenty, and arms wide open and thousands of acres available to turn into attractions one can drive to .... and park.

Screech questioned the timing of another licence in the region, saying casinos have been closed for a full year with no indication of when they might re-open.

“I would argue that we should know how things are going to be re-opened and what the rebound is before they consider a second location,” said Screech. “When [the casino] finally opens its doors again, nobody knows what the uptake will be. How long will it take to get that back.”

Ho said casino operators have submitted health and safely plans to WorkSafe B.C. and the lottery corporation has had recent discussions with the provincial health officer on re-opening timelines. However, nothing definite has been decided.

Screech said the Elements Casino closure since last March has meant losses of between $3 million and $4 million for View Royal, which has meant sidelining the capital projects that gambling revenue usually finances.

Screech knows things like this take years from the discussions stage to opening day right? Unless he thinks everything is still going to be closed 3 or 4 years from now (in which case we'll probably have bigger issues than a casino) I doubt any new project that hasn't even really started is going to sit empty after being completed because covid won't let them reopen.

Every year of delay is a year of casino revenue going to View Royal and View Royal only. There was the same grandstanding in Richmond when Delta was in line for their new casino (currently under construction).

Which is exactly why Screech* doesn't think another casino should open in the region.

* can't help but think of Saved by the Bell every time I see this man's name

The assorted headlines suggesting that "Saanich doesn't want a casino" are more than a bit misleading.

For accuracy, that statement should read "Saanich Council doesn't want another casino" ... as I'm pretty sure the majority of Saanich residents don't even harbour a strong opinion on the issue one way or the other, let alone a strongly negative opinion on the issue.

As an example, as a (near) lifetime resident of Saanich, myself and my neighbours that I've spoken to (briefly) on the issue are all for a new casino in Saanich ... such that the massive influx of "new" taxes from the casino couldn't help but lighten our tax load ... or at least pay for new Saanich projects such that our tax load didn't increase.

This is nothing more than a group of politicians, some experienced and some inexperienced registering their personal opinions on gambling and casinos ... with the express purpose of getting re-elected ... it's got nothing to do with "what's best" for Saanich.

For a group that has no leadership, they have been smart enough to make $80K a month from various levels of Government to lease their Rock Bay land and then have it sit unused!

so they negotiated a deal that involves them doing nothing and getting some free government money.  i mean real leadership that involves them doing some ground work and setting up a real ongoing enterprise.

Why expend the effort when you can make the same amount or more sitting on your hands? CERB/CRB has demonstrated that in spades.

It seems odd, doesn't it?

Has View Royal been complaining about its casino? Mayor Screech has been defending his turf in that regard by trying to diminish the need for a secondary location in the CRD. He wouldn't be doing that if he felt he had a problem on his hands and that he needed to wean his community off of it.

^ view royal has always had lower moral values than saanich we all know.

Saanich rejects casino: 'It came down to values,' mayor says

https://www.timescol...says-1.24315255

i mean esquimalt/vic west has the very lowest morals in the region but view royal is pretty bad.

this heat-map provided by the last pass over by the VV satellite shows us.   the satellite extended its moral compass and picked up these readings on the last passby:

RED is the lowest morals, and as that fades, the region become more upstanding.

understandably, the epicenter of loose morals is CFB Esquimalt.

Saanich is quickly becoming as 'woke' as Victoria.

This is about values? Shut down pubs and liquor stores. Ban the sale of lottery tickets at checkouts.  Any adult toy stores in Saanich? (Asking for a friend...) shut those down too.

iirc saanich had two of the very first neighbourhood pubs in all of BC -  maude hunters and monkey tree.

saanich also had a casino in the past - at the red lion inn.  saanich's last strip bar before it closed.

And yet the most identifiable cause of increased crime in the CRD has been each and every tent settlement. Strange how the woke don't see this.

Shut them all down.  Completely immoral.  Think of the folks wasting their savings over-drinking at pubs! Meanwhile, how many tax breaks do churches get?
