I wonder if part of the retail reduction is related to current retail industry struggles and capacity reduction; given the current slate of store closures, perhaps the developer is worried about significant commercial vacancies?

Coresight Research is predicting up to 25,000 retail store closures in the US this year and 60% of those will be in malls. I imagine that we will see a lot of closures in Canadian malls too...

have we learned nothing from Uptown?

I'd prefer if it was more like Uptown. It isn't. It reminds me more of Eagle Creek Village, except with less commercial.

Makes me wonder what the proposal would look like if Home Depot (or any other commercial entity) weren't already established directly adjacent. The project could have been huge.

got an email that Landmark Cinemas on University Heights closed..i guess that means the location is getting approved for tearing down and those other businesses are gonna have to leave soon too. or it could be mean they don't see it ever reopening cause of the pandemic and it's impossible to social distance since it's small in there.

either way, the theatre was my childhood there, i'm gonna miss it. i hope they open another theatre in the future in this area since most are in downtown and the parking sucks. there is silver city too but i hate that it's in tillicum

Not confirmed, but I heard at least some are supposed to be out by next January.

does this mean they're one step closer to approving this despite the concerns the council has?

Yes and no.

Technically it is a step forward, but it is not uncommon for an application to be moved forward to a Public Hearing for councillors to confirm that the public shares the same concerns that they do. Council can still approve a motion at the Public Hearing to refer the application back to staff for additional work.

Do we think this gets approved?
Seems like minor concerns? That mall is dead so this is a good replacement in. Mind. Fits with the SVP
