That's a very nice looking project!

This will be a big shot in the arm to the McKenzie/Shelbourne "village".

I grew up not far away on a small farm on Feltham Rd, and this corner has come a very long way from the fields, ditches, and greenhouses of Ruby Road, and of my youth :)

The article makes it sound like the GHRA is already on board. Does this mean smooth sailing through approvals?

Saanich council has voted to send an amended plan for University Heights to a public hearing.

Part of the rezoning and development permit application discussed at council’s special meeting Sept. 27 includes a contribution from developer Wesbild of $750,000 for children and families’ charities and greenspace acquisition in Saanich, $100,000 for public art onsite and $150,000 more for electric vehicle infrastructure – a package worth approximately the same as the cost of moving power lines underground for the project.

The 5-4 vote saw Couns. Judy Brownoff, Susan Brice, Colin Plant and Nathalie Chambers opposed.

Shelbourne Community Kitchen staff are disappointed their organization was left off the list of recipients of community amenity contribution funding from the University Heights redevelopment project.

The charity, operating out of the Lutheran Church of the Cross at Cedar Hill Road and Cedar Hill X Road, offers services for food-insecure individuals and families in the area.

On Sept. 27 council approved sending an amended plan for the shopping centre redevelopment by Wesbild to public hearing on Nov. 16.

Erika Schade, Saanich communications manager, said the community kitchen applied for and received $10,000 from the district’s Strategic Priorities Grant program in 2021, and has received such grants from the district since 2015.

As a kid, growing up on a small farm in Gordon Head, that corner was always just Ruby Road, the huge Lum greenhouses, and a couple of farmers fields.

I grew up and lived at Cedar Hill Rd two houses down from the corner of what was Ruby Rd at that time, from 1964-72, routinely tagging along with the older neighborhood teenage boys who used to go bow hunting to pheasant on that (mall) site. Our old hockey pond in winter was right where the library stands at present day Cedar Hill/McKenzie.

anyone know what's going on with this project? they haven't updated the status of it and i thought there was going to be a decision on it soon since they want to target a spring start on construction yet there's no word on it and save on foods is still there.

The project has been approved, but they’re not yet at the de-construction phase.

Good to hear University Heights is getting a facelift + lots of residential. Next up, Saanich needs to field something for Shelbourne x Cedar Hill Cross (what do they even call the shops in that area?)

That area might be known as the Shelbourne Valley.

Should this thread be moved out of the Completed & Cancelled Proposals sub-forum given that it's been approved?

Shelbourne Valley Centre is what the municipal planners call it.

It’s getting 4th reading which is a technicality at this stage.

Kilo, you’re right. I’ll switch it over.

i was reading this article and it looks like construction wouldn't start until late 2022 or in early 2023 so it seems to be delayed again. i guess that means the mall will be quiet for awhile longer.

They should be glad that save on foods is still there paying some kind of rent when almost all the other businesses jump shipped a long time ago thinking it was closing down since last year

The project is expected to be approved this spring, with construction targeted to begin later this year or early in 2023. Once construction is complete, the REIT will have the option to purchase Minto Properties’ stake in the development at a five per cent discount on its then-appraised fair market value.
