Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess urged German workers to prepare for a deeper overhaul to remain competitive when Tesla Inc. ramps up vehicle production at its first European factory outside Berlin next year.
Tesla is swiftly improving built quality and looks set to achieve a production time of just 10 hours per car at its Gruenheide plant, Diess said Thursday in a prepared speech at a staff meeting in Wolfsburg. VW’s main electric-car factory in Zwickau needs more than 30 hours per vehicle, which should be reduced to 20 hours next year.
“Yes, I’m worried about Wolfsburg,” Diess told workers at the first employee gathering at the world’s largest car-manufacturing site since the Covid-19 pandemic. “I want that your children and grandchildren can still have a secure job here with us in Wolfsburg. That’s my point today, that’s why I’m here.”

Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) CEO Herbert Diess sought to defuse a clash over the pace of reforms he thinks are needed to keep up with the likes of Tesla (TSLA.O) by addressing thousands of workers at the German carmaker's Wolfsburg plant on Thursday.
At the heart of the rift lies Diess' concerns that Volkswagen might fall behind rivals unless it accelerates an overhaul to compete with electric vehicle maker Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, and nimbler rivals in China. Workers, meanwhile, are concerned that means potentially huge job cuts.

Scarpitti provided no details, and Reuters didn't help, either.
What does 4680 battery cells mean?
And then there's this gold nugget:
Baglino said last month that Tesla will start delivering its first vehicles with 4680 batteries early next year, but added that "this is a new architecture and unknown unknowns may exist still."
Can't they just ask for guidance from the Texas Institute for Technology and Science, or their rocket scientists at SpaceX?
Know it all.

Amazing, how these guys are experts at pharmaceutical fact-checking but can't describe a simple term they reference a half dozen times in one article.
Anyways, that was an unknown I didn't know was an unknown, thank you for clarifying.

Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess is in hot water. He’s apparently facing a no-confidence vote after pressure from the automaker’s worker council over his comment about the need to go electric faster.
Diess is among the biggest proponents of accelerating electric vehicle adoption within the legacy auto industry.
He has been vocal about his admiration of what Tesla is doing and has pushed for VW to follow Tesla’s lead in many aspects.
The CEO recently invited Elon Musk to talk to his executives and managers in order to motivate them.
He also said that the German automaker risks losing 30,000 jobs if it doesn’t accelerate electric vehicle production.
The comment and his constant comparisons to Tesla haven’t gone down well with many people within Volkswagen.
According to German reports, the concerns have now escalated to a board committee review following pressure from the company’s worker council.
It basically amounts to putting Diess up to a vote of no confidence even though the CEO received backing from the board for his electrification plan less than a year ago.

I’m being frequently asked why I keep comparing us with Tesla. I know this is annoying to some. Even if I no longer talk about Elon Musk, he will still be there and revolutionizes our industry and keeps getting more competitive quickly.

I think that 10 years from now most cars worldwide will be made in China. Especially if electric pick-ups have strong adoption.

Electric vehicle (EV) sales are projected to surpass seven million cars globally in 2021, more than doubling 2020 sales of 3.2 million units.
According to Norway-based independent energy research and business intelligence company Rystad Energy, EVs, including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), will account for around one in every 10 new cars purchased, with a global market share of 10.3%, up from 5.3% in 2020.
It said this market share will be a new global record, marking the first time EV sales have accounted for a double-digit share of total vehicle sales, which are projected to be around 69 million in 2021.

The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) said electric vehicles accounted for 30.4% of new vehicle registrations in October, a record.
“The explanation is relatively simple,” said Germany Trade & Invest ‘automotive expert’ Stefan Di Bitonto. “Carmakers decide what sort of vehicles they allocate parts like semiconductors to. The profit margins for electric vehicles are currently quite high. That’s because the German state subsidises the purchase of EVs with up to EUR6000. Additionally dealers offer a EUR3000 rebate which is making buyers think that now is the right time to purchase a car. So it makes sense to put semiconductors in EVs. Everyone all around is profiting.”
Overall German sales fell 35% to 178,700 cars last month. There were 54,400 new EV registrations, up 13%. Volume of BEVs rose 32% month on month.
