Volkswagen announced Wednesday it has delayed the launch of its all-electric ID.7 sedan in the United States and Canada, citing changing market conditions.

"Volkswagen is committed to making market-driven choices while listening to our customers," the company said in a statement released this morning. "As market dynamics continue to change, Volkswagen is delaying the introduction of the ID.7 sedan in the U.S. and Canada."

Canada is looking at the massive new U.S. import tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles imposed by President Joe Biden earlier this month, but is not making any commitment to following suit north of the border.

Chinese brands are not a major player in Canada’s EV market at the moment but imports from China have exploded in the last year as Tesla switched from U.S. factories for its Canadian sales to it’s manufacturing plant in Shanghai.

And the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association says Chinese EV makers have already made big inroads in Europe and are looking to North America next.

“That potentially is on the horizon,” said CVMA President Brian Kingston in an interview with The Canadian Press.

He isn’t advocating for Canada to match the tariffs specifically, noting the risk of Chinese retaliation. But he said Canada can’t get too out of step with the U.S.

“We always have to align our policy,” said Kingston.

President Joe Biden moved May 14 to quadruple the U.S. import tariff on Chinese-made EVs to 100 per cent. He cited unfair subsidies from the Chinese government to Chinese EV makers. He is also hiking tariffs on a lengthy list of other Chinese products including solar cells, computer chips, medical equipment and lithium ion batteries.

Canada currently imposes a six per cent tariff on Chinese-made vehicles, but the cars do qualify for up to $5,000 in federal rebates for EV purchases.

Canadian industry needs to be protected from Chinese “oversupply,” Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says, as her government mulls tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) similar to the United States.

“We cannot let Canadian industry be wiped out by Chinese oversupply and overcapacity,” Ms. Freeland said during a May 28 press conference updating her government’s economic plan.

Ms. Freeland’s comments followed earlier remarks from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who hinted at the possibility of tariffs on China following the U.S. announcement, but did not commit to similar action.

“We are going to watch carefully what the U.S. is doing, and we will make decisions on how to make sure we’re protecting Canadian automakers, Canadian auto workers, and the Canadian economy at the same time,” Mr. Trudeau said shortly after meeting with U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris on the sidelines of an event held in Philadelphia on May 21.

I’m surprised how much better these CTs look when wrapped. It makes a big difference.

That polished one should just be a factory option. Wouldn’t be that hard to do with robots especially if the panels were polished before install I’d think.

Ever been blinded by the glint of the strip of chrome on a mudflap? Or from the flat vertical rear window of a pickup?

A chrome wrap/polished CT would probably blind anyone within 100 yards and set fire to the desert on a sunny day.

Ya. I think it’s designed to be customized.
Like how people have individual skins for their Minecraft characters. Same building block but the wrap makes it you.

I rode in a 2-year-old Hyundai Kona electric today. Not bad.
