...the campground itself its called SMONEĆTEN, but I'm not sure how many are calling it that...

If I had to guess, no one is calling it that, especially as it is nearly unpronounceable as written.

A new multi-sport facility is coming to Centennial Park in Central Saanich — including space for pickleball — with a boost from a $2-million federal grant.

The covered, open-air facility will replace a 40-year-old lacrosse box with a 17,000-square-foot playing surface designed for a variety of sports and recreational programs, including lacrosse, pickleball and ball hockey.

That might be quite impressive, with a roof that big (the same size as a standard ice hockey rink).

Council also unanimously approved setting up a “community conversation” with North Park residents and businesses to determine what they would like to eventually happen at the 940 Caledonia Ave. site and at 1703-1745 Blanshard St.

The city announced it had purchased the Blanshard site for $11 million this year with the intention of building a new downtown park to replace the now-closed Romeo’s restaurant and Urbana Kitchens and their parking lots.

EXCLUSIVE: Canadian Mother Was Told To Be More “Inclusive” After Complaining About A Male Wearing A “Child’s Bikini” While Showering With Young Girls At Her Local Pool

The mother of a young girl in British Columbia, Canada, is speaking out after a man in a pink, sparkly bikini — adorned with sparkles, frills and princess tiaras — was found showering in the female changing room of her local public pool. After reporting the man’s presence, she was told that the facility “welcomes and celebrates diversity.”

Angie Tyrrell of Saanich, BC, spoke to Reduxx about the distressing experience, which occurred on July 5 of this year at Commonwealth Place, a local recreation center. Tyrrell recounts she had brought her daughter, who was 10 at the time, and her daughter’s friend, who was 11, for a playdate at the pool, where she watched them from the sidelines. After the girls were done, Tyrrell waited for them in the bathroom area of the female changing room.

Whoever told her that and everybody in management that supports that policy needs to be fired, not spoken to, but actually fired.

Winter walking boardwalk loop coming to popular Oak Bay park

Construction in Uplands Park expected to finish by the end of February

Two sections of boardwalk and segments of gravel with screening overlay will create a trail around the perimeter of the park. The framing, sourced from Wickcraft Boardwalks through Habitat Systems, is made out of metal – rather than noisy aluminum – and yellow pine panels.

Uh oh, somebody never told the author that aluminum IS metal.  Or he has forgotten his 8th grade chemistry class.

Oak Bay is a step closer to revamping one of its most popular parks.

At the April 28 council meeting, the district awarded $1,041,057 to an architecture firm hired to prepare public engagement materials and detailed designs and specifications for the revamp of Carnarvon Park.

Plans to upgrade the 9.8-acre green space, which offers tennis and pickleball courts, soccer and rugby fields, two baseball diamonds, a score-keeping and concession building, a splash pad and change rooms, began in 2018.

Colwood Creek's spray and play park is at risk of removal or relocation because of an oversight by the city.

The 12 hectare park – the largest developed park in Colwood – is designated as Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), a provincial land-use zone where farming is the priority use.

While the ALR permits use of the land for “passive recreation,” it does not allow the construction of amenities exceeding a footprint of 100 square-metres.

When asked by Mayor Doug Kobayashi at the May 26 meeting if the spray park is “legal,” staff used body language to give their answer.

“By the look on your face you’ve answered my question,” he said to Yazmin Hernandez, director of planning. “We’re at risk here then, shoot. Thank god someone picked up on this right now.”

Confirming Kobayashi's fear, later in the meeting chief administrative officer (CAO) Jason Johnson, said the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) has told the city the "intensification of the park goes beyond what’s allowed and permissible under the ALR."

Colwood can start a farm there and the children can mind the crops.

Hopefully some common sense prevails at the ALR and they convert this park to something else, or just that little part of it. If its never going to be a 'farm', it should not have such stringent restrictions. Perhaps there needs to be a middle ground for 'green space'.

Re-designate the water spray pad as irrigation. Problem solved.

The ALR should be disbanded. It’s a construct of the 60s, implemented in the 70s, and we’re supposed to act like it’s still relevant when our food production has wildly shifted away from bespoke fields.

When the ALR was set up, we still had choo choo trains delivering goods to our city centre and the Galloping Goose was still galloping to logging operations in Sooke. Think about that for a moment.

The ALR in our urban areas is as useful as a how-to guide to electrifying a house, published in 1970. It’s something that felt right at the time but is now holding our society well back. I’m open to debate this with anyone who wants to have a back and forth.

The City of Richmond has launched an investigation into a large property on No. 5 Road, marketed online as the “Beijing Mansion,” Vancouver’s “ultra-exclusive private members club.”

According to the municipality, the property is located on an agricultural land reserve, which means whatever goods and services stem from it must be agricultural-based.

The club is creating a private club in Victoria, but they use the Richmond property for event rentals.

Instead of thrills, Colwood’s Quarry Park playground has delivered spills for some of its visitors.

Less than two months after it opened to much fanfare in April, hailed as the Capital Region District’s largest playground, concerns have been raised about the safety of the metal spiral tube slide, attached to the park’s three-level castle.

Mom of two Sarah Lalonde broke a leg June 2 using the slide with her four-year-old son on her lap. Days later on June 7, a three-year-old boy was reported to have suffered the same fate.

Questions were also raised about the slide’s safety the day after it opened.

Replying to a City of Colwood Facebook post April 19, one person warned the slide “seemed to be hurting a lot of kids.”
