This is simply the majority owners finally putting their foot down and insisting that the minority owner stop obfuscating the entire operation from them.

The minority owner doesn't want to do that ... so she bailed and called it a "hostile takeover".

It's not complicated, and it's not a "hostile takeover" when the majority owners decide to exercise their rights as .... well ........majority owners.

The operation has been on skaky ground for a long time. Nothing like a feud to make some money for the lawyers.

I wonder what happened to all the money that peopled pledged (unwisely) to try to buy the building.

I saw a couple of show there when thy tried to compete with Jazz Fest. Some good acts but played to a not so full house.

For Immediate Release: March 4, 2019
JAZZ ON VIEW SOCIETY SIGNS 5-YEAR OFFER TO LEASE & OPERATE HERMANN’S
The Jazz on View Society is pleased to announce it has reached a signed offer to lease and operate Hermann’s
Jazz Club for the next five years, contingent on raising $75,000 for improvements and a deposit on the lease.
The lease of the ground floor at 753 View Street will be effective May 1, 2019, ending April 30, 2024.
As well as Hermann’s Jazz Club, the lease includes the neighbouring View Street Social Club. At the time of
expiry there is an option to renew the lease for a further five years.
The lease is subject to Jazz on View Society raising $75,000 by April 15 for improvements and a
commercial lease deposit. Donations can be sent to 1119 Princess Avenue, Victoria BC, V8T 1L2, or
http://www.gofundme.com/Hermanns. Jazz on View is an incorporated, non-profit organization but cannot at this time
issue a charitable tax receipt.
“This in an important step in implementing the Society’s vision to preserve Hermann’s Jazz Club,
carrying forward Hermann’s amazing legacy, and to create a community-based centre, “Arts on View”, for the
performing arts in Victoria,” said Bill Turner, chairman of the Jazz on View Society.
Stephan Nieweler, co-owner of Hermann’s Jazz Club, said: “In honour of Hermann’s legacy, we are
pleased that this institution will be carried forward to provide opportunities for music lovers, young and old, to
interact and share their passion while acting as an incubator for new talent.”
“We believe in the leadership of this group [Jazz on View] to build on the legacy as we enter an
exciting new chapter for live music in the capital,” Nieweler added.
The son of the late Hermann Nieweler, Stephan Nieweler co-owns Hermann’s along with his two
siblings. Hermann’s Jazz Club was founded in 1981 by Hermann Nieweler, who passed on in 2015.
“A lot of work has gone into getting us this far, but there is much to do. Now the real work begins as
we have just six weeks to raise the $75,000 necessary to make the change over possible,” Turner said.
Hermann’s Jazz Club is the longest continuously-running jazz club in Canada. It was recently chosen as the
city’s best nightclub in the Victoria Times Colonist Readers’ Choice Awards. Three other venues are upstairs.
The Jazz on View Society is a Victoria-based registered, non-profit society formed with the goal of keeping
Hermann’s Jazz Club running.
The Society recently expanded its board of directors. These new directors bring business planning,
administration, fundraising, marketing and artistic skills and experience to the table. The Society is dedicated
to not only saving Hermann’s Jazz Club, but expanding the vision to ultimately create a new performing arts
centre in Victoria: Arts on View. For more information, see jazzonview.com.

Victoria already has a not-for-profit Jazz organization ... it's called "The Victoria Jazz Society".

Splitting the relatively small "jazz dollar" in a city the size of the COV may ultimately prove to be an incredibly poor idea.

Anytime I see a not-for-profit asking for millions of dollars (in this case, 8 million dollars if you read their website) in order to buy downtown real estate ... my spidey senses start to tingle.

Not-for-profit nightclubs and bars seeking cash donations seem to be an idea unique to Victoria.

The Hermann's group appears to have the support of some heavy weight jazz folks in this region including some top notch performers, although this org appears to be solely focused on saving/retaining Hermann's as a viable going venue. The VJS still promotes the medium from a broader and truly regional standpoint (including promoting upcoming shows at Hermann's). That said to your point for such a limited market two "jazz" organizations would seem at first blush counter-intuitive....

The concept of a bar, selling an endless supply of booze (generally considered a license to print money in B.C.) doing up a Go-Fund-Me page to get even more money from their patrons than that those same patrons already spend on said booze ... and all of this to purchase real estate, fund capital improvements, and otherwise collect donations that will almost immediately go into somebody else's pocket seem to have very little to do with Jazz or Jazz fans.

Already their website talks about an "Arts Centre" featuring all sorts of amazing performances, from many different artistic genres ... many (if not most) of which have nothing at all to do with Jazz.

Empire building on the (willfully?) uninformed Jazz patrons nut.

I don't think Hermann's makes big money from selling booze. The local jazz crowd, which skews older, tends to be sippers, if they order booze at all - seen many a tea pot at Hermann's.

Not that I agree with the Go Fund Me campaign....

The Victoria Jazz Society is a reason why the place stayed open after the Nieweler brothers took control from their sister last July. The brothers even thank Darryl Mar and Ashley Wey in a statement for their help in the transition:

For immediate release - from Jazz on View

Hermann’s Fundraising Concert with David Vest, Nick La Riviere, HiFi Trio

Jazz on View takes it “over the top” with a star-studded fund-raising concert Wednesday, April 10, at Hermann’s Jazz Club.

Let’s Take It Over the Top – A Hermann’s Fundraiser showcases such well-known Victoria musicians as David Vest, Nick La Riviere, the HiFi Trio, Kelby MacNayr, Tom Vickery, Pablo Cardenas, Edie DaPonte and Shanna Dance.

Alabama-born David Vest was voted “best piano player” five times at Canada’s Maple Blues Awards. The Cascade Blues Association wrote: “An amazing pianist -- rolls out the boogie like the players of old who'd tear up juke joints and turpentine camps.”

Trombonist La Riviere has played with the Temptations, Nikki Yanovsky, 54.40, the Paperboys and Locarno. Pianist Cardenas, a graduate of Havana’s National School of Music, has played in Cuba’s most important theatres. The HiFi Trio, featuring pianist Art Booker and Damian Graham, specializes in New Orleans flavoured funk. MacNayr has drummed with many of Canada’s top players while trumpeter/pianist Tom Vickery is another leading figure on the West Coast jazz scene.

Each act will perform for 20 to 25 minutes. The concert raises funds in support of Jazz on View’s goal of obtaining a five-lease on Hermann’s Jazz Club. The group, a registered society, aims to assume the financial responsibilities of Hermann’s and ensure the nightclub’s doors remain open.

Thanks to an outpouring of community support, Jazz on View is now more than halfway to raising $75,000 needed for its lease of Hermann’s. The deadline to raise the full amount is April 15.

In the first two weeks of its campaign the society raised $43,000 through a GoFundMe campaign and other donations. Jazz on View has also started a new patrons’ program. Significant contributors can enjoy such insider perks as free admission to shows, public recognition and an invitation to an exclusive patrons’ party. For info see: https://jazzonview.c...atrons-program/

Located at 753 View St., Hermann’s Jazz Club is the longest continuously running jazz club in Canada. In a city renowned for its thriving cultural scene, Hermann’s is an important component, not only hosting superb jazz and other musical genres but also providing valuable performance opportunities for young musicians.
Tickets for Let’s Take It Over the Top – A Hermann’s Fundraiser are $45. Doors open at 5 p.m., show time is 7 p.m. Make a reservation and come support this incredible venue and cause. Reserve here: https://hermannsjazz...event_id=482427

The whole Jazz on View story is pretty weird. And I still don't understand why Hermann's decided to compete with JazzFest last year rather than be a venue for JazzFest. Was that the Jazz on View people, or the previous ownership/management?

But it certainly seems like the local musicians are supporting the Jazz on View group. That's pretty much a Who's Who of local talent. "Art Booker" is actually Michael Kaeshammer, so that's him, Vest and La Riviere on the bill, not to mention Damian Graham and Kelby McNayr.

It looks like it will be down to the wire on whether they can raise the money or not.

Jazz on View was formed when there was word that the building was potentially for sale. They wanted to preserve the place and not have it end up being another condo tower or whatever.

The property was technically owned by Hermann's 3 kids. The two brothers and the sister were fighting over control. The sister ran the club for most of 2017 and until last July when the brothers took control and issued a statement that, “One year ago, the business was forcibly taken over by the minority owner, Ingrid Reid (our sister), her husband Fraser and her associate, Susan Sabanski (who refers to herself as Susan Joy), without permission of the majority ownership.”

Allegedly a bunch of Hermann's employees were fired and banned by the sister. The Jazz on View group wasn't welcome either.

It was JazzFest's decision last April not to use Hermann's as a venue. They issued a statement at the time saying they were unsure if the club would still be open when the festival started, “understanding that there will be pending litigation that would interfere with the operation of the club.”

Hermann's competing with JazzFest was was probably an "F you, we're still open."

When the brothers took control in July, the Victoria Jazz Society was involved in the transition.

July 2, 2019 - The Arts On View Society (the new operating name of Jazz on View) has achieved its goal of signing a five-year lease to operate Hermann’s Jazz Club and the next door View Street Social Club.

All operations and licences will be transferred from the current owners (the late Hermann Nieweler’s three children) by July 15. The board is now working hard to upgrade the equipment and is planning other improvements as well.

Thanks to the generous contributions from the local jazz community and its supporters, Hermann's now has a new lease on life.

The Jazz on View Society recently adopted the operating name "Arts On View Society" and has had a new logo designed with this in mind. The operating name reflects the organization’s overall vision of transforming the entire building at 753 View Street - including the upstairs space - into a community-owned and operated centre for performing and visual arts (of course Hermann’s will always be Hermann’s). With this in mind, the Arts on View Society continues to talk to the estate about the potential for a lease on the rest of the building.
