Today is the first day that Hermann’s Jazz Club and the View Street Social Club (next door) are being managed by the Arts On View Society. The change in operations was secured through a five-year, renewable lease with the estate of Hermann Nieweler.

Tuesday, July 16, starting at 7:30 pm, the Phatfunks offer the first live performance at Hermann’s Jazz Club, 753 View Street, under the management of Arts On View. The Phatfunks a dynamic young band of emerging musicians, are kicking off a new, bi-weekly summer funk series every other Tuesday night at Hermann’s all-ages venue.

Media are welcome to attend this historic night.

“We are delighted to take this essential step in our journey,” said interim executive director Nichola Walkden. “Hermann’s Jazz Club is the longest continuously-operating jazz club in Canada and we are thankful that the community’s generosity has kept Hermann’s alive, vibrant and growing.” Hermann’s was voted “Best Nightclub” by Times Colonist readers earlier this year.

In addition to making improvements to the two clubs, Arts On View is working to open the upstairs venues for its vision of a non-profit owned performing and visual arts centre.

Wonder what kind of clause the Arts on View Society has in their contract to run Hermann's - what happens to them if the building is sold?

unless their lease is properly registered on title (along with a floor plan survey) their lease can be invalidated by a sale.

The Drawing Room was so much fun with the giant living room lounge area at the front and the dancing floor at the back.

It has a whole new look!

Wonder what kind of clause the Arts on View Society has in their contract to run Hermann's - what happens to them if the building is sold?

William “Bill” Turner is the chair of the Arts on View Society, and said that as the managers they’ve been well aware that the property would eventually be listed.

“It was certainly crying wolf; there were so many times we thought it as going up for sale, through the period up until now,” Turner said. “We’re hoping if someone buys it that we’ll have a great working relationship with a building investor, but there’s no guarantees.”

Presently the Society has a five-year lease on the building, something that Turner said would be difficult, but not impossible for a new owner to break.

“We are considering what our options are in terms of our vision for the Arts on View, but our whole performing arts concept hasn’t changed,” he said.

In the meantime, renovations will continue, as will bookings for many months ahead.

Victoria’s Hermann’s Jazz Club makes first and only pandemic plea amid struggles

Recent capacity restrictions have been the hardest yet on local music institution

Odd headline.  But I guess they want to emphasize that their previous asks were not covid/restrictions related.

The operators of Hermann’s Jazz Club are closing two of its other live venues at the end of the month.

The Arts on View Society says it is ending its second and third-floor lease with the estate of the late Hermann Nieweler to focus on Hermann’s Jazz Club and the View Street Social pub, which are both located in the same building.

Hermann’s Upstairs, along with Hermann’s Lounge, will cease operations on March 31.

Arts on View Society executive director and general manager Clay Barber said in an email that the decision to terminate the lease was made on Feb. 28.

Despite sold-out shows at Hermann’s Upstairs and various cost-cutting measures, the society is running into the slower spring and summer months and now has to take the “drastic step” of ceasing operations, he said.

“Revenue continues to be a challenge,” he said, adding that Hermann’s Upstairs has not met revenue goals and attendance at Hermann’s Jazz Club has yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels.

Sales at the jazz club are less than two-thirds of what they were before the pandemic, he said.

W. T. F.

– The Board of Directors and Management of Arts on View Society, which operates Hermann’s Jazz Club, View Street Social and Hermann’s Upstairs couldn’t be more pleased and excited to be working with the City of Victoria as our new Landlords. The sale of the building took place today and the new owners are committed to maintaining the building as a downtown music venue for all Victorians.

The City has proven to be such an excellent owner of the Mac that it loses tons of money each year.

Property taxes have never been higher in the CoV and this is how the fools at City Hall think they should be spending MY money?

I’m sure the City will tell you it’s some type of remarkable opportunity they grabbed.

Any indication this won’t be a good investment over the next 20 years?

The City owns a few commercial properties, the Visitor Info/Milestones building for example..  They aren't staffed with City employees nor are they required to have union employees...  They are just leased out like any other property..  As a tax payer I'm usually ok with purchasing real estate as it's a good investment...  Over $2M in rental and lease revenue annually...

If it was such a deal why did it not attract a private sector buyer?

I suspect that the City will lease the space at very favourable rates which would not be viable for a private buyer.

I see a few places owned privately that can wait over a year to get a tenant at higher rates...  Somehow that is affordable...
