I dunno, the bar is set pretty high. There's high turnover though, when after a few months drivers are forced out after cracks appear that weren't evident during training.

Right.  I'm not taking it lightly.   But I think some students would make excellent bus drivers.

Here, they would train for 5 months, and the teacher and other teachers, coaches, principal might even know their character much longer than that, before giving them a positive referral to BCT.

Transit also has lot of other after-hours and weekend hours that might be good for students.  Plus summer holiday relief.

I just don't think bus driving ought to the the strict purview of mature, mostly men working full-time.  Lots of transit systems around the world hire students for part-time jobs.  And I'm sue there is computer "bus simulator" programs that can replace the long hours of driving experience previously thought of as an ideal requirement for candidates.

Look at the guys and girls driving other delivery vehicles.  Couriers, light trucks with wholesale food and linen services etc.  They are all mostly younger and seem to do an OK job.

Driving a bus is not rocket science.

You're assuming students want to work.

A former chief and former councillor of the Snuneymuxw First Nation says he is “shocked and outraged” that a new ferry set to serve the Nanaimo-Gabriola Island route has been given a name in the Kwakwaka’wakw language from the ‘Na̲mg̲is First Nation, based in Alert Bay.

B.C. Ferries named its latest Island-class ferry Gwawis, meaning Raven of the Sea, and says the name was selected with “input and support” from the ‘Na̲mg̲is First Nation. The other Island-class ferry set to serve the route this year, Kwigwis (Eagle of the Sea), was also named by the ‘Na̲mg̲is Nation.

Doug White says the name “shows a lack of regard” for the Snuneymuxw people, since the ferry will ply waters in the heart of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

I, for one, am outraged that the Queen of Oak Bay serves so far away from that municipality.

As Jared Williams said,

“A ferry that operates in Snuneymuxw territory, between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island, was just named in the language of a northern tribe. But.. Hul'q'umi'num nations, like Snuneymuxw and Quw'utsun, were at war with northern tribes when Europeans arrived. It's like using a German word to name an ferry in England.

The article talks about how chief of Nanaimo was upset with the name. I can't say I am supprised. Shows total lack of cultural safety on behalf of BC Ferries.”

I can see the point.

So I’m not sure if he’s going back to 1774 or where. But just 75 years ago we were at war with the Germans. Now I’m not suggesting we name a ferry the HMS Hitler, but I think we can get past other German names and grudges.

I don’t know one way or the other but I would certainly defer to his expertise on the matter.

“It's like using a German word to name an ferry in England.”

Or a First Nation word to name a ferry in British Columbia?

Cumberland (SGI) has cancelled its morning run tomorrow, Quinitsa (crofton - Vesuvius) cancelled the last two round trips tonight, four sailings. All due to “staffing issues”.

The Germans did build the last three big ferries, sailing for British Columbia Ferries.

How about going back to the 'Queen' theme?    Queen of Danzig?  Queen of Offshore?  Qo Tax Subsidies?

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?
