Thing is, Bill Morneau is a pretty experienced businessman, with an MSc in economics - he's at least as well qualified as his predecessor, Joe Oliver, and beats Jim Flaherty and Ralph Goodale, quite handily.

I can't figure out why he's being steamrolled by the PM on this?

I think Gerald Butts has his fingerprints all over this

Previously, during Trudeau's initial time as Liberal party leader, Butts advised on such decisions and issues as the legalizing of marijuana, the expulsion of the entire Liberal senate caucus,[2] and Trudeau's position on the Northern Gateway pipeline.[7]

I am pretty sure his dream will come true in 2019.

We can wish but Trudeau plans to spend our money to buy himself another 4 years.

Since he's such an astute businessman, you'd think he would understand that in the eyes of the taxpayer a tax increase is a tax increase is a tax increase.

The guise of "fairness" is just lazy execution. Do they really think we are that dumb or that gullible? Let's label these tax hikes what they really are - Trudeau needs to increase revenues because he is spending way too much of our money.

Trudeau's long-term vision, no doubt, is to raise the GST.

^ I doubt that he will raise the GST as his message has aligned more with attacking the "rich" and economic inequality. Although he believes that there are stacks of millionaires paying no tax, the reality is that most people in the $200K range are in fact paying 50%+ of their income in taxes which aligns with even the most socialist countries in the world. There may be a few businesses who are using dividends or other measures to defer taxes, but it all washes out at the end of the day. The bottom line is that unless Trudeau wants to revisit capital gains, options or small business taxes then there is not a heck of a lot of room to generate more income short of a robust improvement in the overall economy.

What worries me is that Trudeau has convinced people that every one of their problems in the world is someone else's fault. If you can't find a job, feel that you are underpaid, or are unhappy with your life it is because you are being victimized by someone else. The expectation is that he is going to fix that and all of the world's social injustices.

I would much rather a GST increase than increasing income taxes.

The size of these deficits during a peacetime, economic expansion period is truly alarming.

So they are implementing what they promised before the election and continuing with the changes that the Conservatives had already introduced?!

This was a Harper initiative that the Libs cancelled in 2016. Trudeau is now cancelling his cancellation of the Harper Small Business Tax Cuts.

Except Trudeau will be taking all the credit for "his" idea to cut small business taxes.  Hopefully taxpayers are smart enough to see right thru it

The taxing of employee discounts just means there won't be any of those anymore. Politically, it probably won't hurt them really. I wonder if the provincial employees that receive parking discounts will be affected. I sure hope so.

They have been clear that they are making no changes to the way employee discounts are treated i.e. they will not be taxed.

There are no 'death duties' in Canada - yet.

Given the amount of wealth that is going to change hands over the next decades as the baby boomers shuffle off their mortal coils, I can't not see that being floated as a potential 'revenue' source..

Phony, classless and arrogant act ( After all, as he reminded them more than once, it isn’t every day “you get a chance to talk to the prime minister.”).

Hopefully Canadians can see thru these two clowns.

The icing on the cake is that this reduction in the small business tax rate actually makes worse the perceived problems that Morneau and Trudeau were apparently trying to rectify vis a vis their original proposed changes.

This is clearly a PR driven government whose motivation is optics. This government has absolutely zero substance. This is all a sham from the rolled up sleeves, gender equality, racial minorities, fancy socks and smiles. At this point, I do not think Trudeau has any idea whatsoever what his plan is for running this country.

Yeah, but he's elevated the cost of a report cover to $200,000. That's a huge achievement.
