Hit-and-run driver given 6 years for crash that claimed life of Ladysmith mother

A Ladysmith, B.C., man has been sentenced to six years in prison in a hit and run that claimed the life of a Vancouver Island mother three years ago.

Screenshot 2023-05-29 13.23.52.png
Steven Roderick Knowles, who turns 40 this year, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of an accident in the Aug. 29, 2020 fatal collision.

Knowles received four years on the dangerous driving charge and two years for failing to stop and help.

Katie Blogg, 35, was killed when police say the driver of an F-150 crossed the centre median on the Trans Canada Highway near Oyster Stolo north of Ladysmith and collided head-on with a northbound SUV driven by Blogg. The Ladysmith mother of two died at the scene.

The suspect fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.

Knowles, who is known to police, was arrested on unrelated matters after a five-day manhunt.

@viccrimestop

Dear Suspect

Saanich Police are sad that you didn't include them on the invite list to the cheese party you were clearly hosting, when you decided to steal the $600 Gouda wheel. Or were you going to eat the entire lot yourself? That's a lot of nightmares if you did.

Good thing law-abiding Canadian citizens can no longer purchase, or transfer their existing handguns, to other law-abiding citizens.

But the criminal element continues to acquire and pack hand cannons.

Witnesses, Video Sought After CEW Deployment During Stabbing Arrest

Date: Wednesday, August 31, 2022 - File: #22-33236

Victoria, BC – Investigators are asking for witnesses with video to come forward after a man was arrested after stabbing another man in the chest and threatening officers with a knife.

Patrol officers located a man matching the suspect’s description nearby a short time later. When officers approached, the man first turned away from them and began reaching into his waist area. When officers verbally challenged him, telling him he was under arrest, the man spun back towards them and brandished a knife. He raised the knife above his head and began yelling at officers.

One of the officers drew his duty pistol while another drew and then discharged his Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), also known as a Taser. The CEW deployment was successful, causing the man to drop the knife and fall to the ground. The officers moved in and quickly took the suspect into custody. They recovered the knife during the arrest.

Persons of interest sought in sexual assault investigation

North Cowichan/Duncan

2023-05-30 - File #2023-7595

Investigators from the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying two persons of interest in a sexual assault investigation.

On May 16, 2023, just before 7 p.m., North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP responded to the 200-block of Trans Canada Highway in Duncan after a woman reported being sexually assaulted by an unknown man while she was walking on a trail between McAdam park and Tzouhalem Rd/Trunk Rd.

Police conducted immediate patrols in an effort to locate a suspect, however no one was found. The victim was taken to hospital where she received medical treatment.

A thorough video surveillance canvas was conducted and several witness statements have been taken.

Screenshot 2023-05-30 13.22.55.png

Police are looking to speak with the first person of interest, who helped the victim get to the gas station where she was able to call for help. He is described as a man wearing a black t-shirt and grey shorts.

The second person of interest is described as wearing a blue tank top and black shorts who appeared to be in the area before the victim was able to get help.

Screenshot 2023-05-30 13.23.28.png

‘Every investigation is unique and we must take considerable care to gather evidence, work with victims and then provide accurate and current information to the public, says Inspector Chris Bear, Officer in Charge of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP. Investigators are now seeking the public’s help in identifying these two persons of interest. Police believe these individuals may have crucial information to help advance this investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.

Did they make the trip all the way from Samaria to speak with the police? Perhaps it was a Zoom meeting.

Arrest made in suspicious fires

Sooke

2023-05-31 - File #2023-2018

In the early morning hours of May 30, 2023, Sooke Fire Rescue responded to a series of fires along the Galloping Goose Trail, west of Sooke River Road.

On scene, firefighters located two separate fires: a brush fire involving an 8 foot x 8 foot area and a fully involved tree, consumed by fire reaching approximately 25 feet up. Thanks to the quick and professional response by Sooke Fire Rescue, the fires were extinguished before spreading to the vast forests in the area.

Screenshot 2023-05-31 14.45.41.png

Given the nature of the fires, Sooke Fire Rescue notified the Sooke RCMP who initiated an arson investigation. Through the investigation, it was determined that the fires were intentionally set and based on evidence and observations on scene, a suspect was identified. Later that day, a 28-year-old woman, of no fixed address, was located and arrested.

The joint efforts of Sooke Fire and Sooke RCMP are to be commended, says Mayor Maja Tait.

Any time, but particularly during the unseasonable dry conditions, the risk of a forest fire is high, shares Sooke Fire Chief Ted Ruiter. The current danger rating is high in Sooke which means fires can start easily and challenge fire suppression efforts. The timely response of the career staff, as we transition to a 24/7 resource model, helped ensure the best outcome of this event, Ruiter adds.

I’m proud of the combined efforts of the District of Sooke’s Community Safety Team and appreciate the public’s assistance in providing us with information, Sooke RCMP Sergeant Kevin Shaw notes.

Anyone in the area of the Sooke Potholes / Sooke River Road / Galloping Goose Trail on May 30, 2023, between the hours of 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. that witnessed anything suspicious are asked to call the Sooke RCMP.

Police warn gang members trying to recruit at Greater Victoria schools

Students are lured in through selling vaping products or high-end clothes for the gang members

Screenshot 2023-06-01 03.56.47.png

“Bold and brazen” gang members with known Lower Mainland connections have been recruiting public-school students in Greater Victoria, even walking through school halls and ignoring staff members who tell them to leave, Victoria Police Chief Del Manak said.

Students might get involved in selling vaping products or high-end clothes for the gang members, so they end up thinking they owe the gang members something, Manak said.

Some of the connections have ended in violence, the police chief said, including serious assaults and use of bear spray. “We’ve seen stabbings off of school property that have started through connections on school property.”

He said that the gang members, many of them just a few years older than high-school students, are “savvy” and know how to talk to young people and pretend to be their friends. The students might be promised money, clothing and other things “but the students don’t know that it’s coming at a cost, that it is an attempt to recruit them and then hook them in.”

Manak said it’s important that parents talk to their children about the issue, and advised parents and teachers to watch for changes in student behaviour or the unexplained appearance of new clothes that could indicate something is wrong.

The Greater Victoria School District has sent letters to families from all of its secondary schools about the issue, and the Saanich School District plans to send similar letters in the next few days.

Saanich Police Chief Dean Duthie said what is happening is not new, but has definitely been getting more serious.

Manak said it’s ironic that the Greater Victoria School Board was set to discuss what to do with its school-liaison program Wednesday night.

The last thing we need is kids in spiffy clothes and vaping rather then smoking.

Obviously the horror of having police liaison officers in schools to "trigger" students is a much greater concern than having gang members from Vancouver brazenly walking through school and ignoring requests to leave.

The RCMP says it has "shut down illegal police activity in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia" connected to so-called Chinese "police stations" — but it hasn't said whether it has made any arrests.

In April, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino told a parliamentary committee the federal police service had taken decisive action to close down the alleged stations.

According to the Spain-based human rights watchdog group Safeguard Defenders, more than 100 such facilities exist worldwide in more than 50 countries.

..”said trustees had to consider the “trauma and harm” that police presence can mean for some students, including those who are Black and Indigenous”...

That’s racist.

What a joke.

As usual, it’s too many women in management positions, and too many women in public service management think too much with their inherent compassion, instead of with fiscal and moral prudence.

Well I never vote for school trustees, don’t have a kid so don’t care that much. Figure that’s better than just randomly circling names like most people do for the school board.

Next election I should probably sit down and do some research.
