Three Injured In Drug-Impaired Driving Collision

Victoria, BC – Three people suffered non-life-threatening injuries after a two vehicle collision involving a drug-impaired driver this morning.

Shortly after 9 a.m. this morning Traffic officers and Patrol officers were called to the intersection of Douglas and Finlayson Streets for a report of a two vehicle collision. The driver of a vehicle travelling northbound on Douglas Street proceeded through a red light and collided with a vehicle stopped at the red light southbound on Douglas Street. The drivers of both vehicles suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the southbound vehicle was transported to hospital. The driver of the northbound vehicle which ran the red light did not require transport to hospital for treatment.

A passenger in the vehicle travelling northbound fled the scene into a nearby business. Patrol officers located the man disposing of drugs in the business, and arrested him for possession of a controlled substance. The man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the northbound vehicle failed a standard field sobriety test (SFST) for drug-impaired driving. The drug-impaired driver was served with a 24-hour driving prohibition, a violation ticket for driving without due care or attention, and a violation ticket for invalid insurance.

This file remains under investigation.

Senior assault in Burnside Gorge.

BREAKING: 🚔VicPD seeking suspect who assault senior in Burnside-Gorge; witnesses asked to come forward🚔

Victoria, BC – Patrol officers are looking for witnesses and asking you if you recognize the suspect in a random assault in Burnside Gorge’s Cecila Ravine yesterday.

Shortly before 2 p.m., Patrol officers were dispatched for a report that a 64-year-old woman was assaulted while taking a photograph of a dog.

The victim reported to officers that that she was working in the gardens at the community centre when she spotted a black Labrador sitting alone by the ravine. Concerned for the dog’s safety and wondering if it was lost, she approached the dog and used her phone to capture images of it. While the woman was taking photographs, she was suddenly assaulted from behind by a man. She reported that the man pushed her to the ground and then took her phone and threw it into the ravine. The victim sought safety in the nearby community centre and called police. She received non-life-threatening injuries in the incident, but declined medical attention. The man left the area accompanied by a woman and the dog.

The suspect is described as:
🔹Caucasian male in his early twenties
🔹 five feet, six inches tall
🔹slim build
🔹wearing a football jersey with the number 44 on the back, and a baseball hat and shorts 🔹accompanied by a woman described as riding an orange bicycle, with 🔹pink hair🔹 and a crop top.

The victim reported that the man and woman moved to a nearby tent, which they quickly packed up before fleeing the area prior to police arrival.

A Patrol officer helped the victim search for her phone in the ravine. Unfortunately, the phone was discovered damaged beyond repair.

If you recognize this suspect, or have information about this incident, please call our non-emergency line at (250) 995-7654 ext 1. To report what you know anonymously, please call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

I just walked through the ravine area and it’s a mess. 2 dozen tents, including one with a generator set up, lots of visible stolen material including a 10’ rolling staircase, and a guy passed out with a crack pipe in hand on the staircase. It’s getting seriously out of hand. Covid or no Covid, hotels or no hotels, we have to shift direction and start enforcing the laws. I’m so glad I live across the border in Saanich... although it’s just a 5 min (stolen) bike ride away...

What kind of a community is it turning into if a grown man is no longer free to rough up a woman when she dares to take photographs in public?

If this woman had only listened to Lisa Helps she would have known it was verboten to take photos of #themostvulnerable. She really only has herself to blame.

I have it on good authority that upon closer inspection, the black lab was actually a meth lab.  The perp didn't like that she uncovered his meth lab.

The question is how. When law and order are no longer adhered to by a portion of society, what recourse do the rest of us have? Sure we can vote the council and mayor out, but things will only get worse by then. Clearly the policy of enabling addiction only breeds more addiction and no one seems to be standing up to say we need to enforce abstinence. At what point does the crime running rampant require a higher level of government to intervene?

It's really pretty simple ... you either live in a town where the local government respects law and order, and insists that by-laws be enforced ... or you don't.

Currently, residents of Victoria "don't" live in such a town.

Easy fix though - simply enforce by-laws equally for all, focus on crime prevention, don't pander to criminals, and give the VicPD the tools it needs to do its job as assigned (and expected) by the tax payers of Victoria. BUT ... for a Mayor and Council focused on righting century old perceived wrongs, and encouraging those without homes or jobs to come to Victoria in order to enjoy free accommodations ... the simple tasks noted at the beginning of my post aren't even on their SJW agenda. Because they're not on the agenda, they simply don't get done.

It's actually pretty sad, and getting sadder as each day passes.

The "fix" of course, is getting rid of Helps and all of Council, but I think most straight thinking residents of the COV have that figured out by now. The age old issue remains, which is that of getting the voters to the polling booths in order to complete that clean sweep of City Hall. It's an issue that remains the only barrier between the current abysmal situation, and a return to relative normalcy as was enjoyed for decades by those living in the COV.

What worries me, is that because Council seems to be so unresponsive, that vigilantism will rear its ugly head.

That is concerning - and unless the province steps in, it's hard to see avoiding that outcome.  The needle incident is a form of vigilanteism (regardless of who did it), and it makes me nervous.

Someone is going to get killed. Already planned for and messaging aligned to ensure the most advantageous outcome for the activists. Watch for an immediate full court press on new housing and funding commitments with the dire warning that the problem will quickly escalate out of control and we will become another Portland.

we have already seen innocent people in the wrong place at the wrong time becoming victims of life changing incidents and nothing has changed... we have seen someone get killed downtown a number of years ago just for communicating with a homeless person on the streets and nothing was done (it's only gotten infinitely worse since then) the top news stories yesterday were an incident of stalking in beacon hill park and a senior getting attacked for taking a photo of a dog...  why is this council so oblivious to people's safety, i do agree with others there's going to come a point where the citizens have enough and i do worry what that will look like

Which would of course give them ammo to talk about the bad haters, etc. I do wonder if they are trying to goad people.

Aren't the moderators located on the 6th and 7th floors? That first step out of the office is a doozy.
