Hearing from multiple sources a business man was in the parking lot of the former White Spot on Terminal Avenue in #Nanaimo trying to retrieve some stolen goods when he was shot. I’ve been told he’s in surgery at the hospital but it’s believed he will survive @CHEK_News

Man shot while trying to get back allegedly stolen items from Nanaimo homeless encampment

Victim suffers serious injuries, another man also seriously hurt, two people taken into custody

Mar. 13, 2023

One man was shot, another was injured and two people are in custody after an altercation in or near a homeless encampment close to Nanaimo’s downtown.

Emergency services were called to Terminal Avenue near Bryden Street at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 12, to a report of an altercation involving a firearm.

According to a press release from the Newcastle Neighbourhood Association, a “local businessman” and his friends were attempting to recover items that had been stolen from his business and had been spotted in the encampment along the Millstone River.

RCMP say multiple shots were fired and the victim was hit once. The gunshot victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and one other person was also seriously injured in the altercation. Two people, both of whom had outstanding warrants, were taken into custody as persons of interest in the case but police have not yet determined the identity of the shooter and no charges have been laid related to the incident.

interesting story.

I think we'll see more of this, and people will go in larger groups, better armed.

Hope Eby read this one and thought about it.

Good story years ago about an Asian corner store owner in dt Toronto who nabbed a thief on a bicycle, dragged him into the store and locked him in the store room til police arrived. He was charged with forcible confinement, to which he admitted. TO police made a big deal about how far you can and can't go in the case of a citizen's arrest, and were going to make an example of him. Over the next few weeks someone, (maybe his lawyer) made sure the news reported that this thief was stealing flower baskets on his bicycle, almost daily, from that store. I don't think the guy spent a night in jail. Cops never pursued the charges...

This is why not a single encampment should be allowed, and anyone living in a shelter must not possess weapons.

"...Those involved in the search reported a chaotic scene, with a fight breaking out before the owner and others left with the tools.

They were reportedly shot at multiple times fleeing the area, crossing Terminal Ave. towards the parking lot.

First responders rushed to the scene and transported the man to hospital with multiple injuries. Those involved in the search later said he underwent surgery on Sunday and is slated for further treatment in the days ahead.

(Nanaimo RCMP spokesperson) O’Brien said approximately six people were with the victim when they entered the camp, but said police can’t condone the actions of the group.

“We don’t support this activity at all. This situation could have been prevented if these individuals had simply contacted police and allowed us to safely deal with the situation.”"

...police can’t condone the actions of the group...

Which group? The people trying to reclaim their rightful property or the criminals who inhabit most, if not all, encampments?

Sounds like the individual was injured in the wilderness near Jordan River, then made it or was transported to 8,500-block of West Coast Road, which is just east of the west end of Otter Point Road in the Sooke area.

From RCMP:

On March 12, 2023, at 9:45 p.m. the Sooke RCMP received a report from BC Ambulance Service of a man requiring medical attention in the 8500 block of West Coast Road, Otter Point, B.C.

When Sooke RCMP Frontline Officers and BC Ambulance Paramedics arrived at the scene they confirmed that the man was in-fact deceased. Preliminary investigations revealed the man was likely injured in a remote wilderness area near Jordan River.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) has been called and are leading the investigation with the assistance of the Sooke RCMP.

“The investigation is still in it’s infancy but police have no information to indicate that there is an ongoing threat or risk to the general public,” says Sergeant Chris Manseau with the BC RCMP. “The public can expect to see an increase in police activity in the area of Sooke and Otter Point over the next few days while the investigation takes place.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the VIIMCU information line at 250-380-6211.

West Shore RCMP continue to deal with a barrage of youth related disturbance calls

2023-03-13

File # 2023-4744 and 2023-4648

West Shore RCMP continued to deal with a barrage of youth related disturbance calls this weekend. For the period of March 10 – 12 the West Shore RCMP responded to 11 calls for service involving youth.

The majority of these calls involved youth who were intoxicated by alcohol and/or drugs and were causing a disturbance in public by fighting, yelling and refusing to leave businesses mainly in and around West Shore Town Centre. Two calls for service required a multiple police officer response including the following:

On March 12 at approximately 3:20 p.m. West Shore RCMP received multiple calls from patrons at Starlight Stadium located at 3022 Glen Lake Road in Langford. The stadium was hosting a soccer tournament for youth ages 13-17 when an intoxicated 15-year-old boy began swinging punches at the spectators in the stadium. The same youth suspect then jumped over the fence and onto the players field where he punched an adult who was restraining him and tried to punch several players on the field. The youth suspect was held down by spectators while police rushed to the scene. He was arrested and it was discovered he was also a suspect in theft of liquor bottles from a nearby liquor store earlier the same day. The youth suspect was held in custody and is being brought before court today facing charges of assault, theft under $5000 and breach of conditions as he was bound by a court order with conditions to not consume alcohol.

On March 10 at approximately 8:40 p.m. police responded to a noise complaint of a loud party on Burlington Crescent in Langford. When officers arrived, they spoke with a 20-year-old female who lived in the home and advised the party they were hosting had gotten out of control and requested police to assist them in evicting party goers. Approximately 60-80 youth left the home after police intervened. The homeowners were not present at the time. Police likely arrived and broke this party up before any serious harm came out of it. The host was given a strong warning and advised of the potential of charges had the party ended differently.

Last week the West Shore RCMP responded to 8 calls for service regarding at-risk youth. To read this media release click here.

Did Langford voters vote for this?

Here’s the release:

A VicPD officer is recovering after being stabbed with a needle while responding to an overdose Saturday night.

At approximately 8:30 pm on Saturday, March 11, 2023, officers on patrol in the 900-block of Pandora Avenue were notified by people in the area that a person was overdosing nearby. Officers located the person in distress, who was unconscious, without a pulse and not breathing, a short distance away in the 900-block of Mason Street. Officers administered nasal Naloxone that they were carrying and began chest compressions and CPR.

While officers were providing life-saving medical care to the person, a crowd gathered and began to attempt to intervene in the emergency medical care officers were providing. Additional officers attended and began to move the crowd back. One of the officers was then stabbed under the arm with a needle by a man in the crowd.

Officers disarmed the man who had stabbed the officer and took him into custody.

The person suffering from the overdose regained a pulse, resumed breathing, and a short time later, regained consciousness. Despite the arrival and offers of care from BC Emergency Health Services paramedics, they declined further medical attention.

The officer was treated in hospital for a non-life-threatening stab wound to the arm.

The man who stabbed the officer was transported to cells and held for court.

He faces two recommended charges – obstruction and assaulting a police officer with a weapon.

Jury set to begin deliberations in Devil's Army murder trial; defence makes final submissions

https://www.timescol...issions-6694132

If I were to bet I'd say he is acquitted.  But I'd also say it's not helpful (to the defence) that the accused did not take the stand.  I mean it's probably helpful if he is guilty and might have messed up the defence, but I think that even though they are not supposed to, the jury might think it's odd that an innocent man didn't take the stand to explain it.

The Mayors attitude is that things are getting better and nobody should say otherwise. Some truth in it,  in that while it is not better than last year, it is better than it will be next year.

Red Barn Market, former manager who filmed women in bathroom face class-action lawsuit

March 14, CHEK News

A class-action lawsuit has been approved against Red Barn Market and a former assistant manager who filmed female employees in the bathroom of the grocer chain’s Cordova Bay location.

Screenshot 2023-03-14 18.23.13.png
Matthew Schwabe, who worked as an assistant produce manager between February 2011 and May 2014, previously pled guilty to charges relating to taking videos and pictures of employees using the women’s bathroom at Red Barn Market at Mattick’s Farm. He was sentenced to jail for 15 months and probation for two years.

Now, two plaintiffs have filed the class-action lawsuit on behalf of those who were filmed or photographed without their knowledge or consent. There are six people who have been identified and contacted by Saanich Police, and seven additional people that police say are “potentially identifiable.”

“J.M. deposed that she observed Matthew Schwabe “flirt and attempt to ask young women out on dates. If the women did not reciprocate, he would become rude and often would be very vocal about them, calling them names such as ‘*****’.” M.F. deposed that she observed similar conduct on the part of Matthew Schwabe.”

The decision, written by Justice Brian Mackenzie, outlines the behaviour that J.M. and M.F. say led to the class-action lawsuit, including an allegation that Schwabe said he couldn’t help but comment on the clothing and appearance of female workers because he was “surrounded by a bunch of hot young girls in tight pants.”

Another Red Barn employee, who is only identified by the initials C.J. in the decision, alleges that when she was opening the store on March 12, 2013, Schwabe approached her and tried to talk to her while exposing his penis.

In 2019, Schwabe had filed to stop the class action lawsuit from going ahead citing bankruptcy as the reason, but Mackenzie ruled that bankruptcy is not a valid reason to stop a class action suit.

Search warrant executed after drug trafficking investigation

North Cowichan/Duncan

2023-03-14

File #2022-8770

On March 2nd, 2023, officers with the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP and the Vancouver Island RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) executed a search warrant for drug trafficking on Cowichan Tribes Land.

In December 2022, Cowichan Tribes declared a local State of Emergency stemming from overdose and drug trafficking issues. As a result, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP established Project E-PROVIDE to target and deal directly with these problems.

Officers with the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Street Crime Unit led the investigation which spanned over several months and established evidence of illicit drug trafficking activity from a Statlou Road residence.

Officers from the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP were assisted by ERT officers in the execution of the search warrant. While entering the residence they encountered a sophisticated surveillance system and a door that was specifically designed to aid with the drug trafficking activity, said Corporal Trevor March of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Street Crime Unit.

Screenshot 2023-03-15 04.04.09.png

A 24-year old woman of Victoria was arrested for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking at the scene.

Drug trafficking properties always have a significant negative impact on their neighbourhoods. Investigators who assisted with this project are committed to serving these neighbourhoods and targeting the people who choose to set up and run these operations added Corporal March.

The investigation is ongoing.
